Past tense
 Simple Past Tense Structures:
 (+) Subject + verb.2+ comp
 (-) Subject + did + not + verb.1 + comp
 (?) Did + subject + verb.1 + comp
 (-?) Did + subject + not + verb.1 + comp
 (-?) Didn’t + subject + verb.1 + comp
1) It is used to show augmented action with
clear time
Ex: They watched a movie last night.
2) express an action or a habit or States
which existed in the past but now longer exists
in the present.
Ex: Ali always wanted to serve his country.
3) an action or a habit which did not exist in
the past but it exists in the present.
Ex: They didn’t use to study hard.
 4) It is used to express a present or future unreal meaning
or desire when it is used in conditional clauses or in
subjunctive mood.
 Ex: If I had a lot of money, I would start my own business.
 5) Simple past tense expresses two actions which started
in the past but one action started earlier and the other
action started later.
 Ex: When it started to rain, I stood under the tree.
Regular Verbs Formation
 1) Regular verbs in the past simple tense are formed by adding -ed to the base form of the verb.
 For example: play becomes played
 2) If the verb ends in -e, only -d is added.
 Example: love becomes loved
 3) For verbs ending in a consonant plus -y, the -y changes to -i before adding -ed:
 For example: cry becomes cried
 4) For one-syllable verbs with a single vowel and ending in a consonant, the final consonant is
often doubled before adding -ed:
 Example: stop becomes stopped
 5) Verbs Ending in a Vowel + "y": If the verb ends in a vowel followed by "y", just add "-ed".
 Example: play → played, enjoy → enjoyed.
