When Encyclopedia was finishing breakfast Winslow called Brown. Winslow
said to Encyclopedia to come to my apartment quick. Then the Brown went
to Winslow’s apartment. Winslow was waiting in front of his apartment.
When Brown got of his bicycle a station wagon stopped at the curb and
jammed with all kinds of junk. The driver, Gladys Smith, was 18 years old and
same as Winslow a junk collector person. Then Gladys Smith asked what
happened and then Winslow said everything is ok except my toilet. Two fire
trucks pulled up. Then Winslow said to them to come from the back
entrance of the apartment. Then told what happened. he flushed the toilet
the toilet started to make funny sounds and then hot water shot up and the
toilet exploded Winslow’s mom was sitting dazedly in the living room and his
dad was at the telephone asking about insurance. The floors were wet soaked
with water and water was dripping from the ceilings. Nothing was left of the
toilet. Gladys was taking Winslow to the biggest antique market of the year.
Winslow asked at wonder to Brown was it a bomb? The detective stared
down at the parking lot. I want to see the boiler room he said. Golly,” said
Winslow uneasily. I hope my antique are all right. Everything inside got
smashed. My lion… Winslow whimpered. At that moment Gladys explained
                          everything to Encyclopedia.

in a garage sale. They were ugly, but they looked rare and old and so
might be worth a lot of money. They were going to get the marble lion
checked with an expert at the antique sale today,” Brown nodded and
moved about the pipes and tanks of the boiler room. In the corner he
saw a pickax, a shovel and a sledgehammer. The person who
smashed your antiques also exploded your toilet,” the detective said.
Probably with the sledgehammer. The guilty person was swinging it at
you antiques when it slipped,” said Brown. It smashed this-the central
coil within these two heat exchangers. The fireman and the handy
stopped and started listening to what Encyclopedia was saying. With
the heat exchangers broken, the boiling water from the central heating
plant escaped into the regular hot- and cold-water pipes,” said
encyclopedia. Of course! Said the handy man. Where the joints didn’t
break,” said one of the fireman. Then the handyman, said your are
some smart kid. Then Gladys asked Encyclopedia who smashed all of
Winslow’s antique protested Gladys. You said Brown. How did
    Encyclopedia Know?

                                                                7
Solution
 Gladys smashed all of Winslow’s antiques in
order to hide the fact that she was interested
only in lion. With Winslow’s lion smashed, her
lion would be more valuable. As the one in
existence, it would be worth more money. But
Gladys was too greedy. She loaded too many
of her own antiques into her station wagon to
sell at the Cedartown market. There wasn't
room for Winslow’s! She could not have known
Winslow would not be taking his own antiques
unless she was the one who smashed them!
Since Winslow’s apartment faced the parking
lot in the rear, she had parked in front. She
didn’t want him to see her overloaded wagon.
She hadn't expected to find him in front with
Brown. Winslow didn’t notice anything wrong.
    But Encyclopedia did. 8
Personal Response
 My personal response is that I like the way
Encyclopedia Brown used his mind to figure
out the culprit behind the sean of the
 exploding toilet.

Opinion/ Recommendation
 I think this book is a  I recommend this
4 star book because book for 1-5 grade
it didn’t explain the because this book is a
    solution really good detective book
clearly. and for those of who
                                 likes detective books
                                 might want to read
                                 this book. But
                                 everyone can read
                                 this book cause there
                                 is no age limit that
                                 only this grade can
                                 read it.
