Parallax is an apparent shift in an object's position when viewed from different locations. A quick lab on page 37 further explains parallax. Stars appear to move around Polaris but actually do not move themselves; they are so far away that their motion is difficult to detect from Earth, creating the illusion of motion depicted in Figure 8 on page 38.
