EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Plastic packaging taking important sustainable action
Rigid plastic packaging in Mexico is making important inroads towards being perceived as a
sustainable material. In recent years there has been extensive media coverage about the pollution
caused by plastic waste in rivers, lakes, fields and streets. This created a negative image of plastic
packaging which led civil organisations to launch campaigns encouraging people not to purchase
goods in plastic packaging. Therefore, plastic converters reacted by increasing the production of
many rigid plastic bottles and flexible plastic films with one or more of the following attributes:
Made from recycled materials; made from vegetal resins; being degradable with sun, air or water
and containing less material. In addition, media campaigns were launched to inform customers
about the efforts of packaging converters and FMCG manufacturers to provide sustainable plastic
packaging.
Heineken innovates in beer packaging
Beer in Mexico is dominated by two large companies which, among other consequences, slows
the innovation rate in packaging. However, the recent acquisition of one of them, Cerveceria
Cuauhtmemoc-Moctezuma by Heineken gives signs of change in this matter. During 2011,
Heineken Mexico launched two new packaging units for its premium brand Heineken. The first
was a glass bottle with a new and attractive design aimed to attract high-end consumers looking
for a premium beer and a sophisticated image. The second one is the first metal beverage can
with textured printing; with this new packaging, consumers will have a new tactile sensation when
gripping the container.
Metal and glass packaging producers launch massive media campaigns
The National Chamber of Metal Packaging Producers (CANAFEM) and the leading glass
packaging producer Vitro SAB de CV launched media campaigns in 2011, promoting the benefits
that their respective materials bring to FMCG products, especially food packaging. As Mexican
consumers’ disposable incomes are yet to fully recover from the downturn in 2009 and prospects
are not very positive, inexpensive packaging materials, such as plastic, are preferred by the
majority of consumers as this allows products to have low final prices. In their quest to fight back
against this tendency, the campaign from Vitro emphasises the transparency and safety of glass
packaging through a series of TV ads and presence in magazines featuring famous Mexican
actresses and actors. By its side, CANAFEM via social networks, radio and TV, is promoting
consumption of canned products by highlighting the long shelf-life of the products and their
nutriments, the low cost of the packaging and destroying old myths such as the lead content of
cans and that dented cans were not safe to consume.
Health and fashion driving trends in beverages packaging
During the forecast period, there will be sustained growth of beverages in Mexico, especially new
soft drinks replacing the traditional carbonates. Apart from the already extended consumption of
still bottled water; flavoured bottled water, RTD tea, fruit/vegetable juice and functional drinks are
expected to increase unit volumes, boosting sales of PET bottles and liquid cartons. Consumers
looking for taste, sophistication and healthy beverages will be the target group of such products
and a versatile pack type able to transmit those attributes at a first glance will be crucial to
succeed. Hence, PET bottles that can be produced in many different shapes, colours and sizes
are expected to be the best alternative for beverages producers to address consumers’ demands.
On the other hand, liquid cartons will rely on cost-reductions to be the preferred pack type for
familiar presentations of healthy beverages, such as drinking milk products and fruit/vegetable
juice.

Closures in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
Plastic screw closures accounted for 35% of total closures sales in 2011, mainly due to sales
within beverages. The increasing importance of PET bottles in beverages is boosting sales of this
format as glass packaged brands typically come with metal crowns. PET bottles with plastic screw
closures are the most common pack type for soft drinks such as functional drinks and RTD tea
and account for an important share of sales within carbonates, where glass bottles still lead.
However, as consumption of carbonates decrease due to rising consumer health awareness,
plastic screw closures account for a wider share of soft drinks unit volume sales.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Closures sales in Mexico are dominated by three companies - Grupo Alucaps Mexicana,
Corporativo de Envases and Industrias Innopack (owned by Graham Packaging Plastic Products
de Mexico) - which together accounted for a major share of closures volume sales. Grupo Alucaps
Mexicana is entirely dedicated to closures, from plastic to metal closures and crown caps for
packaged food, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and toiletries and pharmaceuticals. The
company’s main clients include companies such as Grupo Herdez, Merck-México, Cadbury
Bebidas, Nestlé México, Kraft Foods de México, Conservas La Costeña, Sigma Alimentos,
Industrial Lala, Unilever de México and GlaxoSmithKline México. The company owns seven
production sites, five of which are located in Mexico, while one is in Guatemala and the other in
Venezuela.
Table 18 Ranking of Major Closure Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Closures has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 3%, with sales set to be fuelled by
rising demand amongst Mexicans looking for innovative packaging that saves time and delivers
convenient alternatives to consume products within areas such as packaged foods, beverages
and personal care. Closures will continue to increase in importance as a purchasing decision
factor. For instance, plastic closures continuously develop new shapes and transparent plastic
dispensing closures for personal care products such as shampoos and conditioners and lotion
pumps for body care products.

Flexible Packaging in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
Flexible plastic accounts for the majority of flexible packaging unit volume sales in Mexico due to
the fact that the format’s versatility and low cost allows for constant developments in terms of
design and printing and preservation capabilities for food, beverages and other products. Although
the format is already used for almost all fast moving goods, volume sales continue to increase due
to rising demand for the product in the areas in which it is used as well as new developments. For
example, the introduction of biodegradable formats is slowly helping to give flexible packaging a
more environmentally friendly image.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The leading flexible packaging player in Mexico is Bemis Flexible Packaging de Mexico as a result
of numerous different acquisitions during the review period such as the Grupo Cydsa’s Masterpak
flexible packaging production facility, which is located near to Mexico City in the suburb of
Tultitlán. At the time of the acquisition, the facility had 300 employees and value sales of US$70
million per year – a figure which represented 11% of Grupo Cydsa’s total value sales that year.
The company has focused on serving predominantly Mexican customers and manufacturing
packaging for dry food products, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, confectionery and
bakery products.
Table 27 Ranking of Major Flexible Packaging Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Sustainability is going to be the most important issue that flexible plastic converters will have to
address over the forecast period. As solid waste management becomes an ever more high profile
political subject, more attention will be paid to productive processes, including raw materials and
recyclability. There is an interesting debate between flexible plastic producers and the
government, congress and civil associations about the advantages of using degradable resins in
flexible plastic products.

Glass Packaging in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
In 2011, glass manufacturer Vitro launched a marketing campaign called Movimiento de la
transparencia (Movement of Transparency). This is an advertising strategy aimed at young people
between the age of 18 and 34 years-old and, in the words of a spokesman from the company, is
designed to “strengthen the position of glass as the leading packaging material for food,
beverages, beer, wine and spirits, perfumes, fragrances and medicines”. The campaign primarily
targets young people and consists of five 60-second videos shown on TV and in theatres in major
cities in Mexico such as Monterrey and Guadalajara. The campaign also includes a web site and a
presence in social networks. With this campaign, the leading glass manufacturer in Mexico is
trying to recover after a period of negative performance caused by debt problems, the substitution
of glass by more inexpensive pack types and a generalised decrease in consumption after the
economic downturn in 2009. In 2011, glass packaging recorded positive growth which was
boosted by sales of beverages and beauty and personal care products.
RETURNABLES
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Grupo Vitro maintained its dominant position within glass packaging in Mexico in 2011. Within
beverage packaging, the company provides most local producers, especially for tequila, rum and
brandy brands. Grupo Vitro, through its subsidiary companies, is one of the leading manufacturers
of glass packaging in the world. The company’s products have applications in soft drinks such as
fruit/vegetable juice, alcoholic drinks, packaged food and cosmetics and toiletries as well as
automotive and other industrial areas.
Table 36 Ranking of Major Glass Packaging Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Glass packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. This rate is
significantly lower than that recorded during the review period, mainly because glass packaging
will continue to be used for premium products in most areas at a time when the economic situation
of most Mexicans is uncertain and demand for premium products is consequently relatively low.

Liquid Cartons in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
The most important sales drivers for liquid cartons in Mexico are products requiring aseptic
containers, with returnable liquid cartons sales being significantly lower. Liquid cartons recorded
significant inroads within canned/preserved foods areas such as beans, vegetables, UHT soup
and sauces dressings and condiments. Pasta sauces, liquid stock and fonds and tomato pastes
and purées recorded double-digit growth rates in 2011, with sales being driven by consumers
switching from metal and glass to less expensive packaging materials.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Tetra Pak continued to dominate liquid cartons sales in Mexico in 2011. The company tries to
always be a step ahead of its competitors in providing innovative packaging solutions to
customers. Other global players such as SIG Combibloc México, which have a significant
presence in Europe, do not have manufacturing facilities in Mexico. Tetra Pak has continued to be
aggressive in terms of maintaining its client base by permanently improving its customer service.
The company has also invested in heavy marketing campaigns aimed at final consumers with the
slogan “Tetrapak: protege lo bueno” (Tetrapak protects the good things) in a bid to attract
consumers to liquid plastic presentations.
Table 45 Ranking of Major Liquid Carton Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
RTD tea packaging has dynamic, projected unit volume CAGR to 2015. Mexican consumers will
continue increasing consumption of RTD tea as an alternative to traditional packaged beverages
such as carbonates and other sugared drinks. It is important to notice that increasing competition
from flavoured and functional bottled water may pose a potential threat to RTD tea sales over the
forecast period. RTD tea is often confused with these drinks in rigid plastic bottles as some
consumers cannot tell the difference in terms of flavour. However, since only RTD drinks come in
liquid carton packaging, the use of this pack type helps to differentiate company offerings.

Metal Packaging in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
Back in 2009, metal packaging producers launched a mass media campaign to promote the
benefits of this packaging format for food and beverages. This campaign was still active in 2011
and includes TV and radio coverage, Facebook posts and Twitter accounts, conferences in
universities and the publishing of informative materials via the website of the National Association
of Metal Packaging Producers (CANAFEM). The main message of this campaign is that canned
food products are healthy because they are packaged in a vacuum when they are fresh and that
their properties are thus maintained for long periods of time. In addition, CANAFEM tried to bring
an end to myths about the risk to human health of supposed botulism and lead content within
metal food cans.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Fabricas de Monterrey (FAMOSA) continued to dominate metal packaging in 2011 thanks to sales
of metal beverage cans for Heineken de Mexico beer brands and Coca Cola FEMSA carbonates
brands. However, volume sales of metal cans to third parties fell as a result of the company’s own
internal demand for packaging units. FAMOSA’s headquarters are located at Monterrey, N.L., and
the company also has two other productive plants at Ensenada, B.C. and Toluca, Estado de
Mexico.
Table 54 Ranking of Major Metal Packaging Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Metal packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. Beverages packaging
will be the most dynamic area. Industry sources are optimistic about future growth as metal
packaging in Mexico is expected to maintain its current sales share in most areas while demand
for premium packaging within niche areas such as alcoholic drinks, fragrances and coffee is also
expected to increase.

Paper-Based Containers in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
Paper-based containers continued to struggle within tobacco packaging in 2011, with volume
sales falling by 43 million units. Over the last 10 years, volume sales of cigarettes have
experienced a continuous decline in Mexico. This has been mainly due to increased awareness of
the health risks of tobacco consumption, not only to smokers, but to non-smokers as well. This has
in turn led to a fall in social acceptance of the habit of smoking, making it more difficult for people
to smoke and increasing civic organisational activities against smoking. In addition, the fact that
the government has introduced tougher anti-smoking legislation and higher tobacco taxes has also
resulted in a decline in packaging unit volume sales.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Paper-based containers production is dominated by three companies: Copamex, Grupo Smurfit
Mexico and Grupo Gondi. However, the area is also extremely fragmented as there are many
small companies that focus primarily on folding cartons such as Empaques de Papel América,
Empaques Plegadizos Modernos, Envases de Papel Aventis, International Paper Comercial de
México and Pochteca Papel. International companies that produce corrugated board, such as
Sonoco, also have an important presence in folding cartons in Mexico.
Table 63 Ranking of Major Paper-based Container Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Paper-based containers has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. The most
important sources of growth will be folding cartons used for confectionery, beauty and personal
care and instant noodles. Confectionery products such as chewing gum and sugar confectionery
will continue to be demanded as treats for on-the-go consumption and the expansion of retailers
such as discounters and convenience stores in many Mexican cities, combined with an increasing
working population, will boost demand for inexpensive impulse foods.

Rigid Plastic Packaging in Mexico - Category Analysis
HEADLINES
TRENDS
Beverage companies are making efforts to use sustainable rigid plastic packaging. An important
player in this area in Mexico in recent years has been Coca-Cola. The company processed nearly
40% of total PET bottles recycled in Mexico in 2010 and 2011. In addition, Coca-Cola is a pioneer
with regard to integrating recycled materials in its packaging units. For instance, the so-called
Plant-Bottle, used for the cola carbonates brand Coca-Cola, is made from 35% herbal plastic
resins which come mainly from waste during sugar production. Moreover, during the review period
the company reduced by 25% the weight of its PET bottles – a development that led to a 45,000
unit drop in the use of new PET resin. Another of the company’s recent efforts was the launch of
its Eco-Flex bottle, which is used for the bottled water brand Ciel, which is made from 15.5g of
PET and is 20% lighter than the previous bottle.
RETURNABLES
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Graham Packaging Plastic Products de Mexico is the leading manufacturer of PET bottles for
carbonates in Mexico. PET bottles is the most prevalent type of rigid plastic packaging in
carbonates, which is the largest soft drinks area in Mexico. The company has several important
alliances with highly important carbonates bottling companies in Mexico. In many cases, bottling
companies opt to form joint ventures in order to establish facilities that are strong enough to serve
the needs of large multinational companies such as the Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo Inc.
Table 72 Ranking of Major Rigid Plastic Packaging Companies 2010
PROSPECTS
Rigid plastic packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 4%, with sales set to
reach 34.7 billion units. The main source of growth will be sales of HDPE bottles boosted by sales
of beverages, especially emerging soft drinks. Consumers in Mexico will continue substituting
carbonates drinks with fruit/vegetable juices, RTD tea, bottled water and other new drinks as
intensive media campaigns will continue to associate carbonates with obesity. As a result, major
companies will rely on increasing demand for health and wellness to attract consumers.

In recent years there has been extensive media coverage about the pollution caused by plastic waste in rivers, lakes, fields and streets. This created a negative image of plastic packaging which led civil organisations to launch campaigns encouraging people not to purchase goods in plastic packaging. Therefore, plastic converters reacted by increasing the production of many rigid plastic bottles and flexible plastic films with one or more of the following attributes: Made from recycled materials; made from vegetal resins; being degradable with sun, air or water and containing less material. In addition, media campaigns were launched to inform customers about the efforts of packaging converters and FMCG manufacturers to provide sustainable plastic
  • 2. packaging. Heineken innovates in beer packaging Beer in Mexico is dominated by two large companies which, among other consequences, slows the innovation rate in packaging. However, the recent acquisition of one of them, Cerveceria Cuauhtmemoc-Moctezuma by Heineken gives signs of change in this matter. During 2011, Heineken Mexico launched two new packaging units for its premium brand Heineken. The first was a glass bottle with a new and attractive design aimed to attract high-end consumers looking for a premium beer and a sophisticated image. The second one is the first metal beverage can with textured printing; with this new packaging, consumers will have a new tactile sensation when gripping the container. Metal and glass packaging producers launch massive media campaigns The National Chamber of Metal Packaging Producers (CANAFEM) and the leading glass packaging producer Vitro SAB de CV launched media campaigns in 2011, promoting the benefits that their respective materials bring to FMCG products, especially food packaging. As Mexican consumers’ disposable incomes are yet to fully recover from the downturn in 2009 and prospects are not very positive, inexpensive packaging materials, such as plastic, are preferred by the majority of consumers as this allows products to have low final prices. In their quest to fight back against this tendency, the campaign from Vitro emphasises the transparency and safety of glass packaging through a series of TV ads and presence in magazines featuring famous Mexican actresses and actors. By its side, CANAFEM via social networks, radio and TV, is promoting consumption of canned products by highlighting the long shelf-life of the products and their nutriments, the low cost of the packaging and destroying old myths such as the lead content of cans and that dented cans were not safe to consume. Health and fashion driving trends in beverages packaging During the forecast period, there will be sustained growth of beverages in Mexico, especially new soft drinks replacing the traditional carbonates. Apart from the already extended consumption of still bottled water; flavoured bottled water, RTD tea, fruit/vegetable juice and functional drinks are expected to increase unit volumes, boosting sales of PET bottles and liquid cartons. Consumers looking for taste, sophistication and healthy beverages will be the target group of such products and a versatile pack type able to transmit those attributes at a first glance will be crucial to succeed. Hence, PET bottles that can be produced in many different shapes, colours and sizes are expected to be the best alternative for beverages producers to address consumers’ demands. On the other hand, liquid cartons will rely on cost-reductions to be the preferred pack type for familiar presentations of healthy beverages, such as drinking milk products and fruit/vegetable juice. The increasing importance of PET bottles in beverages is boosting sales of this format as glass packaged brands typically come with metal crowns. PET bottles with plastic screw closures are the most common pack type for soft drinks such as functional drinks and RTD tea and account for an important share of sales within carbonates, where glass bottles still lead. However, as consumption of carbonates decrease due to rising consumer health awareness, plastic screw closures account for a wider share of soft drinks unit volume sales. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Closures sales in Mexico are dominated by three companies - Grupo Alucaps Mexicana, Corporativo de Envases and Industrias Innopack (owned by Graham Packaging Plastic Products de Mexico) - which together accounted for a major share of closures volume sales. Grupo Alucaps Mexicana is entirely dedicated to closures, from plastic to metal closures and crown caps for packaged food, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and toiletries and pharmaceuticals. The company’s main clients include companies such as Grupo Herdez, Merck-México, Cadbury Bebidas, Nestlé México, Kraft Foods de México, Conservas La Costeña, Sigma Alimentos, Industrial Lala, Unilever de México and GlaxoSmithKline México. The company owns seven production sites, five of which are located in Mexico, while one is in Guatemala and the other in
  • 6. Venezuela. Table 18 Ranking of Major Closure Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Closures has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 3%, with sales set to be fuelled by rising demand amongst Mexicans looking for innovative packaging that saves time and delivers convenient alternatives to consume products within areas such as packaged foods, beverages and personal care. Closures will continue to increase in importance as a purchasing decision factor. For instance, plastic closures continuously develop new shapes and transparent plastic dispensing closures for personal care products such as shampoos and conditioners and lotion pumps for body care products. Although the format is already used for almost all fast moving goods, volume sales continue to increase due to rising demand for the product in the areas in which it is used as well as new developments. For example, the introduction of biodegradable formats is slowly helping to give flexible packaging a more environmentally friendly image. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE The leading flexible packaging player in Mexico is Bemis Flexible Packaging de Mexico as a result of numerous different acquisitions during the review period such as the Grupo Cydsa’s Masterpak flexible packaging production facility, which is located near to Mexico City in the suburb of Tultitlán. At the time of the acquisition, the facility had 300 employees and value sales of US$70 million per year – a figure which represented 11% of Grupo Cydsa’s total value sales that year. The company has focused on serving predominantly Mexican customers and manufacturing packaging for dry food products, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, confectionery and bakery products. Table 27 Ranking of Major Flexible Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Sustainability is going to be the most important issue that flexible plastic converters will have to address over the forecast period. As solid waste management becomes an ever more high profile

There is an interesting debate between flexible plastic producers and the government, congress and civil associations about the advantages of using degradable resins in flexible plastic products. This is an advertising strategy aimed at young people between the age of 18 and 34 years-old and, in the words of a spokesman from the company, is designed to “strengthen the position of glass as the leading packaging material for food, beverages, beer, wine and spirits, perfumes, fragrances and medicines”. The campaign primarily targets young people and consists of five 60-second videos shown on TV and in theatres in major cities in Mexico such as Monterrey and Guadalajara. The campaign also includes a web site and a presence in social networks. With this campaign, the leading glass manufacturer in Mexico is trying to recover after a period of negative performance caused by debt problems, the substitution of glass by more inexpensive pack types and a generalised decrease in consumption after the economic downturn in 2009. In 2011, glass packaging recorded positive growth which was boosted by sales of beverages and beauty and personal care products. RETURNABLES COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Grupo Vitro maintained its dominant position within glass packaging in Mexico in 2011. Within beverage packaging, the company provides most local producers, especially for tequila, rum and brandy brands. Grupo Vitro, through its subsidiary companies, is one of the leading manufacturers of glass packaging in the world. The company’s products have applications in soft drinks such as fruit/vegetable juice, alcoholic drinks, packaged food and cosmetics and toiletries as well as automotive and other industrial areas. Table 36 Ranking of Major Glass Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Glass packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. This rate is significantly lower than that recorded during the review period, mainly because glass packaging will continue to be used for premium products in most areas at a time when the economic situation

Liquid cartons recorded significant inroads within canned/preserved foods areas such as beans, vegetables, UHT soup and sauces dressings and condiments. Pasta sauces, liquid stock and fonds and tomato pastes and purées recorded double-digit growth rates in 2011, with sales being driven by consumers switching from metal and glass to less expensive packaging materials. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Tetra Pak continued to dominate liquid cartons sales in Mexico in 2011. The company tries to always be a step ahead of its competitors in providing innovative packaging solutions to customers. Other global players such as SIG Combibloc México, which have a significant presence in Europe, do not have manufacturing facilities in Mexico. Tetra Pak has continued to be aggressive in terms of maintaining its client base by permanently improving its customer service. The company has also invested in heavy marketing campaigns aimed at final consumers with the slogan “Tetrapak: protege lo bueno” (Tetrapak protects the good things) in a bid to attract consumers to liquid plastic presentations. Table 45 Ranking of Major Liquid Carton Companies 2010 PROSPECTS RTD tea packaging has dynamic, projected unit volume CAGR to 2015. Mexican consumers will continue increasing consumption of RTD tea as an alternative to traditional packaged beverages such as carbonates and other sugared drinks. It is important to notice that increasing competition from flavoured and functional bottled water may pose a potential threat to RTD tea sales over the forecast period. RTD tea is often confused with these drinks in rigid plastic bottles as some consumers cannot tell the difference in terms of flavour. However, since only RTD drinks come in liquid carton packaging, the use of this pack type helps to differentiate company offerings. This campaign was still active in 2011 and includes TV and radio coverage, Facebook posts and Twitter accounts, conferences in universities and the publishing of informative materials via the website of the National Association of Metal Packaging Producers (CANAFEM). The main message of this campaign is that canned food products are healthy because they are packaged in a vacuum when they are fresh and that their properties are thus maintained for long periods of time. In addition, CANAFEM tried to bring an end to myths about the risk to human health of supposed botulism and lead content within metal food cans. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Fabricas de Monterrey (FAMOSA) continued to dominate metal packaging in 2011 thanks to sales of metal beverage cans for Heineken de Mexico beer brands and Coca Cola FEMSA carbonates brands. However, volume sales of metal cans to third parties fell as a result of the company’s own internal demand for packaging units. FAMOSA’s headquarters are located at Monterrey, N.L., and the company also has two other productive plants at Ensenada, B.C. and Toluca, Estado de Mexico. Table 54 Ranking of Major Metal Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Metal packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. Beverages packaging will be the most dynamic area. Industry sources are optimistic about future growth as metal packaging in Mexico is expected to maintain its current sales share in most areas while demand for premium packaging within niche areas such as alcoholic drinks, fragrances and coffee is also expected to increase. Paper-Based Containers in Mexico - Category Analysis HEADLINES TRENDS Paper-based containers continued to struggle within tobacco packaging in 2011, with volume sales falling by 43 million units. Over the last 10 years, volume sales of cigarettes have experienced a continuous decline in Mexico. This has been mainly due to increased awareness of the health risks of tobacco consumption, not only to smokers, but to non-smokers as well. This has in turn led to a fall in social acceptance of the habit of smoking, making it more difficult for people to smoke and increasing civic organisational activities against smoking. In addition, the fact that the government has introduced tougher anti-smoking legislation and higher tobacco taxes has also resulted in a decline in packaging unit volume sales. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Paper-based containers production is dominated by three companies: Copamex, Grupo Smurfit Mexico and Grupo Gondi. However, the area is also extremely fragmented as there are many small companies that focus primarily on folding cartons such as Empaques de Papel América, Empaques Plegadizos Modernos, Envases de Papel Aventis, International Paper Comercial de México and Pochteca Papel. International companies that produce corrugated board, such as Sonoco, also have an important presence in folding cartons in Mexico. Table 63 Ranking of Major Paper-based Container Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Paper-based containers has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 2%. The most important sources of growth will be folding cartons used for confectionery, beauty and personal care and instant noodles. Confectionery products such as chewing gum and sugar confectionery will continue to be demanded as treats for on-the-go consumption and the expansion of retailers such as discounters and convenience stores in many Mexican cities, combined with an increasing working population, will boost demand for inexpensive impulse foods. • 11. player in this area in Mexico in recent years has been Coca-Cola. The company processed nearly 40% of total PET bottles recycled in Mexico in 2010 and 2011. In addition, Coca-Cola is a pioneer with regard to integrating recycled materials in its packaging units. For instance, the so-called Plant-Bottle, used for the cola carbonates brand Coca-Cola, is made from 35% herbal plastic resins which come mainly from waste during sugar production. Moreover, during the review period the company reduced by 25% the weight of its PET bottles – a development that led to a 45,000 unit drop in the use of new PET resin. Another of the company’s recent efforts was the launch of its Eco-Flex bottle, which is used for the bottled water brand Ciel, which is made from 15.5g of PET and is 20% lighter than the previous bottle. RETURNABLES COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Graham Packaging Plastic Products de Mexico is the leading manufacturer of PET bottles for carbonates in Mexico. PET bottles is the most prevalent type of rigid plastic packaging in carbonates, which is the largest soft drinks area in Mexico. The company has several important alliances with highly important carbonates bottling companies in Mexico. In many cases, bottling companies opt to form joint ventures in order to establish facilities that are strong enough to serve the needs of large multinational companies such as the Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo Inc. Table 72 Ranking of Major Rigid Plastic Packaging Companies 2010 PROSPECTS Rigid plastic packaging has a projected forecast period unit volume CAGR of 4%, with sales set to reach 34.7 billion units. The main source of growth will be sales of HDPE bottles boosted by sales of beverages, especially emerging soft drinks. Consumers in Mexico will continue substituting carbonates drinks with fruit/vegetable juices, RTD tea, bottled water and other new drinks as intensive media campaigns will continue to associate carbonates with obesity. As a result, major companies will rely on increasing demand for health and wellness to attract consumers.
