There is a massive area of trash floating in the North Pacific Ocean stretching from California to Japan. Known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, it is located within the North Pacific Gyre where circulating ocean currents concentrate debris. The patch contains over 100 million tons of plastic, foam, abandoned fishing gear and other garbage covering an area twice the size of Texas. Approximately one-fifth of the waste comes directly from ships while the majority originates on land.
