1. If you are a PNG Bible Church member
than you probably heard of them; young,
energetic and destined to have their voices
heard, the Joseph’s from Morobe Province
are on a journey to have their own recording
studio in the country.
The group is made up of siblings; the
eldest Joseph Nomoru as the lead singer/
songwriter (23), Jessica Nomoru (21), twins
Joelyn Nomoru (18) and Jeacklyn Nomoru
(18) and their younger brother Joshua (13).
The Josephs are a Bible Church family
and singing was an everyday thing. Raised
in a Christian home, Gospel songs is all
they ever sing and listen to. Joseph as the
eldest is the leader of the band and as he
admits; growing up was not as typical as
many other kids.
He was put in a position where he had
to take care of his little sisters while his
parents were out doing ministry work
around PNG.
Chuckling when recalling, Joseph retells
of an occasion where he and his sisters had
to climb a mango tree to shake its branch so
the fruits would fall down.
“The mangoes were not even ripe or
half ready but we had it. But we never
complained of lack of food and we were
always glad when mum and dad came
home” Said Joseph.
Nonetheless, Joseph admits he and his
siblings never complained even when they
had nothing to eat when their parents were
out.
“I started singing when I was six years
old and Jessica was four. We stood on
stools and sang in front of the whole school.
I was brave enough to sing but Jessica was
nervous and kept crying so I had to sing and
then look back at her to make sure she was
singing too,” said Joseph.
Joseph was hardly at school because he
spent most of his life in ministry work for
his church.
During the band’s fundraising dinner last
week Friday at the Boroko Bible church,
Joseph compared his upbringing as a
sacrifice his parent’s made to the Lord by
committing him, the first born, to God’s
work.
During those times, Joseph also learnt to
play all the different instruments.
“I’ve been singing around all my life but
I’ve never excelled in school because my
heart and my mind was on Music. I tried
going back to school and pick up my pace in
English and Math and all that but all I could
see was music.”
Joseph started singing publicly when he
was invited to sing at the Wantok Radio
Light when he was around his early teens.
He sang around with Wantok Radio Light
but it came a time when Joseph realized he
needed to write his own songs.
“I wrote a lot of songs, like a lot. I don’t go
to school, nor do I read books. Even though
I tried reading, I fall asleep after a reading
a few paragraphs. The point of my story is
that what I am today is the handy work of
God. He can turn something that is nothing
to something that is worth something. That
is what he had done in my life.”
“All the songs that I write is about
young people and the life we go through as
Christians,” said Joseph.
Joseph and his sister Jessica also joined
the Digicel Stars singing competition in
2010 from the Lae auditions. At that time
his family was going through a rough patch
and even though he felt responsible to do
something, he couldn’t. He was told by his
mother to join the Digicel Stars.
“Digicel stars was one of the most trial
times for me. Everyone sang pop songs
and stuff but I was singing gospel. Even
though they asked me to sing other songs,
I couldn’t because that was not me” Joseph
explained.
He said the fact that he was singing gospel
was something other Digicel contestants
made fun about but he never gave up.
“The moment we took stage and opened
our mouths, the holy spirit himself sang
through us. Everybody was stunned and
even the camera man started to watch us and
forgot about his camera that was capturing
the ceiling. Jessica and I were surprised as
well but the judges told us that we were too
good that we had to join the second group.”
When Joseph and Jessica arrived in Port
Moresby, they still faced challenges. Even
though he was told that there was no market
for him to sing gospel songs with his sister,
he went ahead and did so.
After making it into the semi finals as the
judge’s favorite, he was warned again to
sing other songs. Even though they offered
them the first prize to sing other songs, they
refused.
“I did not go for the money but I wanted
to show the gospel kids out there that you
can do anything as a musician or as an
artist’s just like anybody else,” he said.
They made it to the finals and came
second place and he said from that moment
on, God opened doors for them.
The Josephs had their fundraising dinner
last week Saturday at their local church at
4mile to raise funds to bring down their CDs
for their second album from Australia. The
event was attended by fellow Bible Church
members, the media, fans and guests.
Pacific Games Executive Manager
Marketing Ken Siminji who also attended
the dinner announced that the Joseph’s will
be singing at the Pacific Games welcome
ceremony. Singing alongside them will be
Lae MP Loujaya Kouza and the Joseph’s
are looking forward to that event. Siminji
also added that the Joseph’s second album
will be also on sale during the Games.
