STRUCTURE

There are 38 colleges of the
University of Oxford and six
Permanent Private Halls, each
controlling its membership and
with its own internal structure
and activities. The Permanent
Private Halls were founded by
different Christian
denominations.

GOVERNANCEOxford Cambridge
The university's formal head is the
Chancellor, currently Lord Patten of Barnes,
though as at most British universities, the
Chancellor is just a titular figure. The
Chancellor is elected by the members of
Convocation and holds office until death.
The Vice-Chancellor, currently Andrew
Hamilton, is the de facto head of the
University. Five Pro-Vice-Chancellors have
specific responsibilities for Education;
Research; Planning and Resources;
Development and External Affairs; and
Personnel and Equal Opportunities.
The office of Chancellor of the
University, for which there are no term
limits, is mainly ceremonial and is held
by David Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of
Turville. The current Vice-Chancellor
is Leszek Borysiewicz. While the
Chancellor's office is ceremonial, the
Vice-Chancellor is the de facto
principal administrative officer of the
University.

TEACHING
Oxford Cambridge
Undergraduate teaching takes
place during three eight week
terms: Michaelmas Term, Hilary
Term and Trinity Term. These
teaching terms are shorter than
those of most other British
universities. Students have three
holidays period, known as the
Christmas, Easter, and Long
Vacations.
The academic year is divided into
three academic terms,
determined by the Statutes of the
University. Michaelmas term
lasts from October to December;
Lent term from January to
March; and Easter term from
April to June. Students also have
three holidays period, known as
the Christmas, Easter, and Long
Vacations.
