Seven is the number to remember! It takes seconds for us to form a first impression. This is not a judgment call! This is instinct!
Let’s not under estimate our instincts. This is our nature. Think about this…ALL creatures depend on their instincts for survival. Nature has created shapes, patterns, colors, and smells, to mention a few…to warn all of us living creatures from danger...to help decide to fight or flght!
In The Righteous Mind, Jonathan Haidt explains our “instinct” in detail and talks about how our instincts is stronger and works before our moral values and moral judgements take place.
Those who are aware of the impression they leave on others are more successful in defusing any negative impressions that they might leave with others.

What do you want people to think of you? You create the thoughts by presenting yourself the way you choose to do.
Are you a cool, chilled, relaxed, non-confrontational person? Are loose, colorful clothing, and flip flops your thing? Or, are you the “formal” type that will not wear jeans? Or, do you like to shock people?
What you wear matters! How your hair looks, matters! How you make people feel about you, matters!
Where do you want people to put their attention, when talking to you? Your cloths or your words? We’re not going to tell you how to dress…just, that it is important and you’ll need to be aware of its impact!

Presence! Now…this is a biggy! In her book, Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to your Biggest Challenges, Amy Cuddy talks in detail about presence and its importance! I highly recommend you to read this book.
Presence goes beyond the appearance and presentaion...it is about showing confidence and trust!
Amy talks about the power poses such as standing like a Superman or Wonder Woman. Stretching your arms! Think of the winners of a race...They stretch their arms! Don’t slouch... Speak out loud and with confidence. You have an opinion and you need to share it.
If you have presence, you have inner power! With inner power you will interpret what you hear with a more objective view! Your act upon rather than reacting to what people say!

What kind of knowledge to you have? Do you have a degree? Are you self-thought? That shows a lot of initiative and discipline! Where are your potentials and what kind of value do you bring to an organization?
Remember that you’ll need to learn, continuously, in your career! In my career, I’ve had to learn about all sorts of domains in order to design properly for my products…from flight schedules to menu planning, cargo management, and revenue management!
In the case of interviews, for example, you need to do your homework about ”that” organization as well to be able the question?
Need to learn to adapt with tools, etc. or become obsolete.

What are your skills? Do you know yourself well enough to identify your strengths to build your career on them? Or, sell them?
I have always like to take on projects and manage them. The more experienced I became in my career, the more I enjoyed taking on bigger challenges. Yet, I couldn’t tell you exactly how my mind was working about these challenges and projects…until leadership of the team I used to report to introduced Strength Finder 2.0 to us. We read the book and took the test and the results were simply fascinating!
I discovered that my top 5 – out of 36 – strengths are: Achiever, Learner, Input, Responsible, and Connectedness! These strengths make me a very strong Strategizer and Executioner...and, a good people person!

You experience is what supports your knowledge and strengths. Wikipedia defines experience as: “the knowledge or mastery of an event or subject gained through involvement or exposure to it”.
It is the encounter (practical contact with and observation) of facts or events – dictionary.
The significance of YOUR experience is the uniqueness of it. Because it is “your” experience through your lenses. How you interpreted things. What you learned that I might not have, because we each have our own unique interpretation of the world!
Did you see an opportunity in an event, and made the best of it? Did you miss an opportunity because you chose to wait on someone else, or were afraid of the outcome? What was your thinking process that you went through?

Why is Networking important? Because it’s not what you know! It’s who you know!
I used to be so determined that I am going to go up the ladder of success on my own that I did not value networking. I am here, speaking to you because of networking! It is important and yes, it does matter.
The question is how and where are you networking? Professional site? User Groups? Again, it depends on what your goals are? Who are you trying to attact?
My preference is to maintain a presence in the professional sites and spaces...in a professional manner. That’s where you need to highlight your knowledge, experience, and strengths, for your organization, recruiters, or future employers to see.

Social media is a very powerful tool to communicate a vast variety of things. We’ve already seen revolutions broadcasted through this media.
I realize that millennials grew up with social media. So, this might be a second nature to most of you. However, you consider to be selective of what kind of information you choose to post...depending on your goals.
If you have not heard, just this year, applicants were rejected from Harvard University because of their postings on social media.
You need to be careful of what you are posting, where and how you are posting it. Again, this is a free country...thank God! You can do whatever you wish. However, it will come back to haunt you...if you are not being careful.

Based on your goals and plans, consider who you are networking with, when, and how?
I am not a golfer…but, I’ve been told that golfers don’t generally talk business when they are golfing! They do it, at a later time, after they have created the rapor with the individuals on the golf course.
Imagine you are at a users group meeting. There’s pizza and drinks for all. There’s a guy enjoying the pizza...actually, staying close to the table so that he can help himself to more. There’s a young girl, sitting by herself focused on her cell... And, there’s this other woman, smiling, making conversations with a few and sharing information.
When the time comes for you to consider someone in your network, who will you think of? Who will you reach out first?

This is something that in each of us, similar to our IQ.
Benneth Litwin and J Schuh, in their book: “Brilliance, Understanding the Creative Mind” refers to each individual having a threshold before they…basically explode! :-D
What you need to be aware of is the fact that your EI governs everything we talked about so far. Most importantly, it influences your interpretations of events and words, your interpersonal behaviors and your presence.
This is where your confidence in yourself, your abilities, and your emotions reflect as you go through your life.

By this, I don’t mean whether you are aware of how pretty you look today…how great those new jeans look on you...or, how fabulous your haircut is! Even though all of these qualities matter.
By Self Awareness, I am referring to how MINDFUL you are?

What is Mindfulness? It is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something! To be Present!
A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.
My story… chronic pains à missed work!
Anger and insecurity à damaging career advancement
Not believing in myself à Not deserving!
At one organization, I got a raise in 6 mos due to my skills. A year later, I was voted out of my bonus due to mis-handling of work relationships!
How I became mindful… meditating for years before I begun to see the Seda puzzle pieces jell together and begun identifying my emotions (Eckhart) …and learning to forgive…including myself! Which helped me not to be judgmental listening better, more empathy.
My colleagues say they can’t imagine how I could be that person. I now mentor my colleagues!
The more mindful you become…which will be a gradual process…you will also realize that many ‘problems’ of your life are your interpretations of events and they are not as bad as you used to think they were! Or, that they are temporary obstacles and will pass.
The stronger your inner power becomes, the calmer and more “level headed” you become. You learn to interpret things with better logic and less emotions…dismiss many comments and events, as if they never existed!
How to become mindful!
● Learn to take care of your body! You are what you eat! Your body is a temple! Fast and detox
● Learn to get rid of stress... Exercise, meditation, Yoga,...whatever works for you....just do it!
● Practice keeping aware of your feelings. Are you aware of these emotions? Sadness...pity...happiness... Identify you emotions … identify which might
opportunities for growth! Be honest!
● No judging...yourself or others!
● Forgive yourself!
● I need to highlight “Fear”! If you can recognize and eliminate fear in your life...I bet that you will enjoy life even more! Be aware of the fears in you!
“Fear is the root of all evil!” I can’t help but agree with it. In workplace...that’s when jealousy rises its ugly head...because I may fear that I am not going to get ahead of my colleague! This is just one example…of course!

With mindfulness and self awareness, you can raise that threshold that J and Ben wrote about! You raise your EI! I am a living example of it!
The more you get in touch with your emotions...the stronger your inner strength becomes! And, surprisingly, the more genuine you become!
Self Awareness will also help you own your actions!
