The atlantic revolutions and their echoesColleen Skadl
The Atlantic Revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, inspired by Enlightenment ideals of liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty, led to revolutions in North America, France, Haiti, Spanish America, and echoes like the abolition of slavery. These revolutions contributed to the rise of modern nationalism by giving rise to new nations like the United States and establishing national identities in France. Industrialization and new technologies further strengthened nationalist sentiments across Europe and in colonized lands.
Germany wanted to quickly defeat France at the beginning of World War 1 to avoid fighting on two fronts against France and Russia. Their plan, called the Schlieffen Plan, involved invading France through neutral Belgium and Luxembourg to outflank French defenses. In 1914, Germany invaded France as planned but the French and British were able to halt the German advance at the First Battle of the Marne, preventing a swift German victory and forcing Germany into a two-front war.
Martin Luther published his 95 Theses in 1517 as an invitation to academic debate about the selling of indulgences by priests like Johan Tetzel. The Theses criticized the Church's position that indulgences absolve sins and ensure salvation. While Luther did not intend a split from the Church, his arguments questioning the authority of the Pope and Church traditions moved in a heretical direction. After the Theses spread widely, Luther was summoned by Church authorities but refused to recant his positions that challenged the Church's power over salvation and interpretation of scripture.
World War I began in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist. This sparked conflict between the Allied powers of Britain, France, and Russia against the Central powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. The United States initially remained neutral but entered the war in 1917 on the side of the Allies after German submarine attacks and the Zimmerman Telegram. The war was characterized by new military technologies like machine guns, tanks, airplanes, and poison gas, as well as brutal trench warfare with immense loss of life.
Several long-term tensions contributed to the outbreak of World War I, including colonial rivalries between European powers in Africa and trade competition between Germany and Britain. Nationalist sentiments in Germany and France also played a role, with France seeking revenge over the Franco-Prussian War and loss of Alsace-Lorraine. The complex network of military alliances across Europe exacerbated tensions, and the immediate trigger was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist, leading Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia and drawing other European powers into the conflict.

World War I began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand led Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. This caused countries to take sides and enter the war through a series of alliances, with the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire fighting against the Allied Powers including Britain, France, Russia and later the United States. Major battles included the Battle of the Marne in 1914 where Germany failed to capture Paris, and the Battle of the Somme in 1916 which was the bloodiest day for Britain. The United States entered the war in 1917 after German U-boats attacked American ships, and launched a major offensive in 1918 that helped turn the tide in favor of the Allies
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain funded Christopher Columbus's expedition to reach India and China by sailing west, hoping it would make Spain richer and spread Christianity. Columbus sailed with three small ships, landing in the Bahamas and mistakenly believing he had reached India, before establishing colonies in the Americas on four voyages. However, Columbus developed a poor reputation for brutality, failed to find gold as promised, and was arrested upon returning to Spain.
The Spanish-American War began due to tensions between Spain and Cuban independence fighters, exacerbated by yellow journalism in American newspapers. The sinking of the USS Maine in Havana harbor led the U.S. to declare war on Spain in 1898. The U.S. defeated Spain in Cuba and seized control of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Treaty of Paris ended the war and granted independence to Cuba while ceding Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the U.S.
Making of Modern Britain Wilson Governments 1964 to 1970NeilCharlesGardner
Harold Wilson's Labour government that held power from 1964-1970 faced significant economic challenges upon taking office. The balance of payments deficit was worse than expected at over £1,000 million annually. In response, the Labour government implemented an import surcharge and raised taxes rather than enacting spending cuts. This upset the financial industry in London. The government also had troubled relations with trade unions as strikes increased. The declining coal industry also posed economic problems as Britain shifted to other fuel sources like oil.
Causes of the Cold War - Disagreements over Germanymrmarr
The document discusses several events in Germany after World War 2 that contributed to tensions between the Western allies and Soviet Union, leading to the Cold War. It describes how Germany was divided between the allies after the war per the Potsdam Agreement, but the Soviets were unhappy with Western involvement in East Germany. This tension increased as the Western zones unified into West Germany in 1949. In response, the Soviets blockaded land access to West Berlin, but a massive Western airlift undermined this move. While angering the allies, the blockade failed and ended in 1949, showing the tensions had deeper ideological roots that would characterize the long Cold War.
The document discusses several groups that opposed the Nazi movement in Germany:
The Edelweiss Pirates were disenfranchised working class youth who mocked the Hitler Youth by changing lyrics in songs and sheltering escaped prisoners. The July Plotters were army officers who attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1944. The White Rose group was a non-violent resistance group led by Hans and Sophie Scholl that published anti-Nazi leaflets calling for democracy. They were caught, tried for treason and executed.
The Scientific Revolution of the 1500s-1600s marked a shift away from merely accepting traditional ideas to making conclusions based on experimentation and observation. Copernicus published a book in 1543 arguing the sun, not Earth, was the center of the universe, contradicting the existing Ptolemaic geocentric model. Galileo built upon this, using a telescope to observe moons orbiting Jupiter which supported the heliocentric theory, though he was later put under house arrest for contradicting the Church. Newton later formulated laws of motion and universal gravitation, proving the existence of gravity through mathematics. The Scientific Revolution established the scientific method of testing hypotheses through experimentation and observation.
Ho Chi Minh led Vietnam to declare independence from France in 1945. The French were eventually defeated in 1954, but the US became involved to contain the spread of communism according to the Domino Theory. The Geneva Accords temporarily divided Vietnam along the 17th parallel. Elections were planned to reunify the country in 1956 but did not occur due to South Vietnam blocking them for fear that Ho Chi Minh would win. The US supported the anti-communist South Vietnamese leader Ngo Dinh Diem and began training the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh built up North Vietnam's army and Viet Cong guerrilla fighters in the South. In 1964, alleged attacks by North Vietnam
The document summarizes the impact of the 1929 stock market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression in Canada. It describes how Canada's economy was deeply tied to the US and was severely affected by the crash. As the US economy ground to a halt, hundreds of thousands of Canadians lost their jobs with no unemployment assistance. Western Canada, reliant on wheat exports, was hit especially hard as prices plummeted. The government under PM Mackenzie King initially took little action and downplayed the crisis. This led to the election of R.B. Bennett and his Conservatives in 1930, but Bennett also struggled to address widespread unemployment that reached 1/3 of Canadians by 1933.

The document provides an overview of several key leaders and events of the American Civil Rights Movement. It discusses Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball, the Montgomery Bus Boycott led by Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., and King's iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. It also profiles other activists like Malcolm X and the Black Panthers who advocated more militant approaches to achieving racial equality and justice.
In medieval Europe, Roman Catholicism was the dominant and only officially recognized religion. The Catholic Church hierarchy mirrored the Roman Empire structure, with the Pope as the head of the Church. The Church had immense power over people's spiritual lives, deciding if they would go to heaven or hell, and wielding control over religious doctrine and interpretations of the Bible. This gave the Church significant influence over many aspects of life in medieval Europe.
