Music From The Civil War
Music played an important role during the Civil War. It was used to entertain troops and in parades. General Robert E. Lee said "Without music, there would have been no army." Some popular songs of the time included "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Confederate soldiers also sang their own versions of songs and others like "Dixie," "Goober Peas," and "The Yellow Rose of Texas" became favorites among Southern troops.

However, his presidency and life were cut short after being assassinated in Dallas, Texas at age 46 after just over 1,000 days in office.

William Saroyan was born in 1908 in Fresno, California to Armenian immigrant parents. He was placed in an orphanage at age three after his father's death. In his later writings, he described his experience in the orphanage. Saroyan went on to support himself through various jobs and decided to become a writer after being inspired by some of his father's writings. He is best known for his 1934 short story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" which brought him breakthrough success. Saroyan published both fiction and non-fiction works exploring his Armenian heritage and travels. He died of cancer in Fresno in 1981.
World War II Propaganda
During World War 2, the US government subjected American citizens to an intense propaganda campaign through various media to gain support for the war effort. This included posters emphasizing patriotic themes and stereotyping enemies, songs on the radio that promoted patriotism and depicted enemies as barbaric, and cartoons from Disney that contributed to the propaganda. The propaganda was effective, hugely increasing public support for US involvement in the war.
