 The first English child born in the New World was Virginia Dare of Fort Raleigh in 1587. Fort Raleigh
would later become known as “The Lost Colony of Roanoke” after all 115 colonists mysteriously
vanished from the island.
 Orville and Wilbur Wright’s historic flight occurred just south of Kitty Hawk.
 Blackbeard the Pirate met his demise at the hands of Lt. Maynard of the Royal Navy near the present
day town of Hatteras. His ship the ‘Queen Anne’s Revenge’ was just recently found off the coast.
Blackbeard is rumored to have buried a vast treasure in the area prior to his death.
 Wild Ponies near Duck are the descendants of Spanish Mustangs which survived early shipwrecks.
 A cemetery on Ocracoke island jut west of Hatteras is officially British soil. It contains the graves of
British sailors washed ashore after the wreck of the HMS Bedfordshire during WW2.
