Otanaha fortress was built in 1522 in cooperation between the Portuguese and King Ilato as a stronghold to defend against enemy attacks. It is located 8 km from Gorontalo city center in Dembe 1 village. The fortress is made of sand, limestone, and maleo bird eggs and is open daily from 7am to 6pm, costing Rp. 5,000 per visitor. It offers views of Limboto Lake from its 348 steps. Two other fortresses in Gorontalo are Otahiya with 245 steps and Ulupahu with 59 steps.
