INSIGHTS FROM SHOP OWNER:
• AC buses outside
• No shed waiting area
• Lack of centralized ticket booking system
• Bus should be inside station boundary
• Lack of information about buses
• Passengers can’t find buses
• Maybe a digital board for bus information
• Illegal parking issues
• Buses without permit are also present in the bus
station
• No labeling of “Mango Bus Station”
• No information about destinations of buses
• Schedule of buses with destinations should be
displayed

OUR OBSERVATIONS:
• Bus boarding/deboarding outside bus station on
roadside - cause of traffic jams
• In the Gate 1 area, only one gate for buses to
enter/exit
• Private vehicles randomly parked
• Damaged buses kept in the bus station
• Multiple ticket sellers
• No station labels
• No signage
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 10
OUR
OBSERVATIONS:
• The bus stand is called Mango Bus Stand but there
is no board at the bus stand or near the bus stand
which reads ‘Mango Bus Stand’.
• Boarding & deboarding activities happen outside
the bus stand, on the roadside which causes traffic
jams
• The bus stand is divided into two parts – the first
one is used Jharkhand State Transport buses and
the other one is used for the operations of private
carriers and buses of other states.
2/1/20XX 11
OUR OBSERVATIONS:
• The bus stand is called Mango Bus Stand
but there is no board at the bus stand or near
the bus stand which reads ‘Mango Bus
Stand’.
• Boarding & deboarding activities
happen outside the bus stand, on the roadside
which causes traffic jams
2/1/20XX 12
Our Observations:
• The bus stand is divided into two parts – the
first one is used Jharkhand State Transport
buses and the other one is used for the
operations of private carriers and buses of
other states.
• The first part has the Gate Number 1 and the
second one has Gates 2 & 3. The first part has
just one entry and exit point. The other gate is
not wide enough to allow entry in the first part.
2/1/20XX 13
OUR OBSERVATIONS:
• There is no display of bus schedule and passengers have
to resort to asking around to get to know where their bus
is.
• The waiting room does not have fans and adequate light.
• Private vehicles are randomly parked anywhere inside
the bus stand.
• Several damaged buses are occupying space of the bus
stand.
• Multiple ticket sellers stand outside the stand and sell
tickets very informally.
2/1/20XX 14
Challenges & Measures :
Navigating the way
forward
Problem
1. No signboard that reads
‘Mango Bus Stand’ –
• Navigation to the bus stand without
the use of a directions app or
somebody’s help is difficult
since there are no boards or signage
to guide anyone to the bus stand.
• Even the hoarding at the bus stand
does not read ‘Mango Bus Stand’.
Suggestive Measure
 Change the hoarding at the bus stand
to a new prominent one that reads
‘Mango Bus Stand’.
 The big advertising billboard outside
the bus stand must keep space vacant
on the top for ‘Mango Bus Stand’ to
be mentioned irrespective of the
advertisement.
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 15
Challenges & Measures
:Navigating the way forward
Problem
2. Lack of two gates is
a bottleneck –
• Since only one gate is wide
enough to allow the entry and
exit of buses, issues of
congestion arise when 2 buses
are scheduled to leave or enter
around the same time.
Suggestive Measure
Widen the other gate so as to allow
entry of buses from that gate.
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 16
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
3. Mismatch in supply and
demand -
• A load of 500 buses/day is being
handled by a bus stand which can
only accommodate 200 buses/day
• This is one of the biggest reasons
as to why some buses do their
boarding and deboarding outside
the premises of the bus stand.
Most carriers occupy the space
inside the bus stand.
Suggestive Measure
 There must be regulations on how
much time before departure can a
carrier park a bus inside the stand.
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 17
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
4. No information pertaining to
schedule is displayed anywhere -
• Passengers often face a difficulty
in locating their buses because
conductors verbally explain
them as to which bus to board
and they are not comprehensive.
Nobody at the bus stand has a
clear schedule of buses.
Suggestive Measure
A big digital board that displays the
bus schedule and information must be
installed at at least one spot inside the
bus stand to facilitate the travellers.
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 18
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
5. Ineffective boarding and
deboarding system –
• Most buses deboard their passengers
outside the bus stand, only to enter the bus
stand and get parked till their next
journey.
• Likewise, when they have to leave, most
of them pick their passengers up from
outside the bus stand. This creates a
possibility of traffic congestion in peak
traffic hours and on holidays.
• The entire space of the bus stand is
majorly used for parking which essentially
does not add any value to the place.
Moreover, nobody takes ownership of the
traffic ruckus caused by the inefficiency of
this process.
Suggestive Measure
 Boarding and deboarding of passengers
must happen inside the premises of the
bus stand.
 All buses that have at least one hour
before they start their journey can be
parked elsewhere.
 One probable location where all other
buses can be made to park to create space
at the bus stand is near the Subarnarekha
Burning Ground (which is less than 200
metres from the bus stand).
 Any buses which are not fit for
operations must be scrapped elsewhere.
2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 19
Problem
6. Deplorable waiting facilities –
• Inadequate Ventilation: The waiting room lacks ventilation due to
the absence of fans.
• Limited Lighting: A single tube light is insufficient for the
spacious waiting area.
• Poor Seating: Chairs are in deteriorated condition, and the room
contains discarded items like old tires and scrap.
• Security Concerns: No security personnel or cameras, making the
area susceptible to theft and crime, especially at night.
• Passenger Reluctance: Passengers avoid using the waiting room
due to security issues, preferring to stand outside, which is
problematic during monsoon.
• AC Dormitory Option: An AC dormitory is available for longer
wait times, but its condition is also subpar.
• Water Filling Point: Only one potable water filling point is
inadequate for both parts of the bus stand.
• Limited Restrooms: A single government-standard restroom is
located far from the premises, leading to open defecation.
• Overpriced Restroom: The restroom charges exceed government-
set rates for usage.
Suggestive Measure
2/1/20XX 20
The waiting room must
be renovated to the
bare-minimum socially
acceptable standards.
At least a few CCTV
cameras must be
installed around the
premises of the bus
stand.
Covered waiting areas
should be constructed
near tea stalls and
shops.
Another water filling
spot must be made in
the other part of the
Mango bus stand.
Several more
washrooms must be
constructed in the bus
stand.
A separate resting
area for drivers and
conductors must also
be set up.
Doing all these things
would make the non-
value-added time
bearable and the
concept of psychology
of queues can be used
to distract the
customer from delays
of any kind.
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
7. Designated spaces for
bookings and enquiry not
being used –
• There are designated offices in the
bus stand which are supposed to be
used by authorities to help
passengers book tickets and provide
them general assistance. But these
offices are not used.
• Rather, representatives of all carriers
stand in and around the bus stand and
only keep announcing where their
bus is going to gain the attention of
passengers.
Suggestive Measure
 The space must be utilized for a
proper booking system.
 The same space can be used by staff
to provide assistance to travellers.
2/1/20XX 21
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
8. Illegal parking inside the
premises –
A number of people working at the bus
stand park their cars and two-wheelers
inside the premises which eats up space.
Several buses without permits also get
parked at the bus stand.
Suggestive Measure
 Some place, not too far from the bus
stand, must be identified to allow
parking for workers and visitors.
 Stringent fines must be imposed for
violation of any parking rules for bus
carriers as well as passengers.
2/1/20XX 22
Challenges & Measures
: Navigating the way forward
Problem
9. Lack of other facilities –
There are enough shops inside the bus
stand which sell a variety of products but
most of these products are overpriced.
Plus, the biggest bus terminal of
Jamshedpur does not have an ATM
either.
Suggestive Measure
 Prices must be regulated by the local
administration.
 Some bank can be approached to set
up an ATM as soon as possible.
 A canteen that serves affordable food
would be a great gift for passengers
travelling a long distance.

  • 7. INSIGHTS FROM SHOP OWNER: • AC buses outside • No shed waiting area • Lack of centralized ticket booking system • Bus should be inside station boundary • Lack of information about buses • Passengers can’t find buses • Maybe a digital board for bus information • Illegal parking issues • Buses without permit are also present in the bus station • No labeling of “Mango Bus Station” • No information about destinations of buses • Schedule of buses with destinations should be displayed

  • 10. OUR OBSERVATIONS: • Bus boarding/deboarding outside bus station on roadside - cause of traffic jams • In the Gate 1 area, only one gate for buses to enter/exit • Private vehicles randomly parked • Damaged buses kept in the bus station • Multiple ticket sellers • No station labels • No signage 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 10
  • 11. OUR OBSERVATIONS: • The bus stand is called Mango Bus Stand but there is no board at the bus stand or near the bus stand which reads ‘Mango Bus Stand’. • Boarding & deboarding activities happen outside the bus stand, on the roadside which causes traffic jams • The bus stand is divided into two parts – the first one is used Jharkhand State Transport buses and the other one is used for the operations of private carriers and buses of other states. 2/1/20XX 11
  • 12. OUR OBSERVATIONS: • The bus stand is called Mango Bus Stand but there is no board at the bus stand or near the bus stand which reads ‘Mango Bus Stand’. • Boarding & deboarding activities happen outside the bus stand, on the roadside which causes traffic jams 2/1/20XX 12
  • 13. Our Observations: • The bus stand is divided into two parts – the first one is used Jharkhand State Transport buses and the other one is used for the operations of private carriers and buses of other states. • The first part has the Gate Number 1 and the second one has Gates 2 & 3. The first part has just one entry and exit point. The other gate is not wide enough to allow entry in the first part. 2/1/20XX 13
  • 14. OUR OBSERVATIONS: • There is no display of bus schedule and passengers have to resort to asking around to get to know where their bus is. • The waiting room does not have fans and adequate light. • Private vehicles are randomly parked anywhere inside the bus stand. • Several damaged buses are occupying space of the bus stand. • Multiple ticket sellers stand outside the stand and sell tickets very informally. 2/1/20XX 14
  • 15. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 1. No signboard that reads ‘Mango Bus Stand’ – • Navigation to the bus stand without the use of a directions app or somebody’s help is difficult since there are no boards or signage to guide anyone to the bus stand. • Even the hoarding at the bus stand does not read ‘Mango Bus Stand’. Suggestive Measure  Change the hoarding at the bus stand to a new prominent one that reads ‘Mango Bus Stand’.  The big advertising billboard outside the bus stand must keep space vacant on the top for ‘Mango Bus Stand’ to be mentioned irrespective of the advertisement. 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 15
  • 16. Challenges & Measures :Navigating the way forward Problem 2. Lack of two gates is a bottleneck – • Since only one gate is wide enough to allow the entry and exit of buses, issues of congestion arise when 2 buses are scheduled to leave or enter around the same time. Suggestive Measure Widen the other gate so as to allow entry of buses from that gate. 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 16
  • 17. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 3. Mismatch in supply and demand - • A load of 500 buses/day is being handled by a bus stand which can only accommodate 200 buses/day • This is one of the biggest reasons as to why some buses do their boarding and deboarding outside the premises of the bus stand. Most carriers occupy the space inside the bus stand. Suggestive Measure  There must be regulations on how much time before departure can a carrier park a bus inside the stand. 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 17
  • 18. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 4. No information pertaining to schedule is displayed anywhere - • Passengers often face a difficulty in locating their buses because conductors verbally explain them as to which bus to board and they are not comprehensive. Nobody at the bus stand has a clear schedule of buses. Suggestive Measure A big digital board that displays the bus schedule and information must be installed at at least one spot inside the bus stand to facilitate the travellers. 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 18
  • 19. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 5. Ineffective boarding and deboarding system – • Most buses deboard their passengers outside the bus stand, only to enter the bus stand and get parked till their next journey. • Likewise, when they have to leave, most of them pick their passengers up from outside the bus stand. This creates a possibility of traffic congestion in peak traffic hours and on holidays. • The entire space of the bus stand is majorly used for parking which essentially does not add any value to the place. Moreover, nobody takes ownership of the traffic ruckus caused by the inefficiency of this process. Suggestive Measure  Boarding and deboarding of passengers must happen inside the premises of the bus stand.  All buses that have at least one hour before they start their journey can be parked elsewhere.  One probable location where all other buses can be made to park to create space at the bus stand is near the Subarnarekha Burning Ground (which is less than 200 metres from the bus stand).  Any buses which are not fit for operations must be scrapped elsewhere. 2/1/20XX PRESENTATION TITLE 19
  • 20. Problem 6. Deplorable waiting facilities – • Inadequate Ventilation: The waiting room lacks ventilation due to the absence of fans. • Limited Lighting: A single tube light is insufficient for the spacious waiting area. • Poor Seating: Chairs are in deteriorated condition, and the room contains discarded items like old tires and scrap. • Security Concerns: No security personnel or cameras, making the area susceptible to theft and crime, especially at night. • Passenger Reluctance: Passengers avoid using the waiting room due to security issues, preferring to stand outside, which is problematic during monsoon. • AC Dormitory Option: An AC dormitory is available for longer wait times, but its condition is also subpar. • Water Filling Point: Only one potable water filling point is inadequate for both parts of the bus stand. • Limited Restrooms: A single government-standard restroom is located far from the premises, leading to open defecation. • Overpriced Restroom: The restroom charges exceed government- set rates for usage. Suggestive Measure 2/1/20XX 20 The waiting room must be renovated to the bare-minimum socially acceptable standards. At least a few CCTV cameras must be installed around the premises of the bus stand. Covered waiting areas should be constructed near tea stalls and shops. Another water filling spot must be made in the other part of the Mango bus stand. Several more washrooms must be constructed in the bus stand. A separate resting area for drivers and conductors must also be set up. Doing all these things would make the non- value-added time bearable and the concept of psychology of queues can be used to distract the customer from delays of any kind.
  • 21. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 7. Designated spaces for bookings and enquiry not being used – • There are designated offices in the bus stand which are supposed to be used by authorities to help passengers book tickets and provide them general assistance. But these offices are not used. • Rather, representatives of all carriers stand in and around the bus stand and only keep announcing where their bus is going to gain the attention of passengers. Suggestive Measure  The space must be utilized for a proper booking system.  The same space can be used by staff to provide assistance to travellers. 2/1/20XX 21
  • 22. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 8. Illegal parking inside the premises – A number of people working at the bus stand park their cars and two-wheelers inside the premises which eats up space. Several buses without permits also get parked at the bus stand. Suggestive Measure  Some place, not too far from the bus stand, must be identified to allow parking for workers and visitors.  Stringent fines must be imposed for violation of any parking rules for bus carriers as well as passengers. 2/1/20XX 22
  • 23. Challenges & Measures : Navigating the way forward Problem 9. Lack of other facilities – There are enough shops inside the bus stand which sell a variety of products but most of these products are overpriced. Plus, the biggest bus terminal of Jamshedpur does not have an ATM either. Suggestive Measure  Prices must be regulated by the local administration.  Some bank can be approached to set up an ATM as soon as possible.  A canteen that serves affordable food would be a great gift for passengers travelling a long distance. 2/1/20XX 23
