Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Greetings everyone! My name is Jerry Suppan.\nTonight I am going to talk to you about a very important topic. \nTalked about many times before by many. \nMany books written about it.\nI will present my version of the concept:\n\nSuccess.\n
What IS success? (questions to audience)\n Definition, interpretation, dream: success?\n Achieve: How?\n Equals happiness?\nMany define as:\n Good Health\n Money/wealth\n Leisure lifestyle / luxury (vacations, hobbies, sports)\n\n
Will present the concept of success from two pespectives in life. \nPersonal development\n = Health. \n If no good, nothing else matters.\nBusiness or career development\n Acquisition of things in life you define as ‘success’, requires income (= money)\n\n
Good health = essence of life, basic existence.\nProper maintenance, (or lack of) will impact your concept of success \n \n IF... Immobile, handicapped\n THEN... \n NO money and wealth creation\n NO free time in your life for leisure and luxury activities.\nMany consider health only physical\nTotal health: 3 components (health triad):\n Mind ・精神\n Body・肉体\n Spirit・心\n* Each category could become a complete course of study; \n* beyond scope of introductory concepts\n* Providing basic ideas as ‘food for thought’ as guidance.\n
Are you ready to expand into who you really are? What you can be?\nWhat are issues within us that block our life force energy from being released and become an artful self?\nImportant to understand issues - how / why we get stuck in a pattern.\n stress or stress-free\n Overwork\n Deadlines\n environmental influences.\n Gossip, intimidation affliction\n negativism vs positivism\n attraction or alienation\n example (negativity): old man on train\n resource (positivism): Law of Attraction (video)\nSelf-discipline: Conscientious cultivation to deal with the above issues\n
Bodily / physical health... Most people consider as health\nPhysical well-being also crucial for good health.\nUnable to physically move, can’t do things, can’t enjoy life.\nEating & Drinking 飲食生活\n food... what? where?\n drinks... what types? where?\n vending machine choices.. what do you choose?\nSleeping・睡眠 Need to regenerate・体を充電するために\n proper amount of sleep? \n push to extremes, denying body adequate sleep?\n Overwork 過労死 Balanced lifestyle or excessive.\n Drugs/alcohol (麻薬・アルコール)(Example: premature deaths - Michael Jackson, Donna Summers, Whitney Houston, others)\nExercise・運動\n Allocate time to exercise every day? \n\nfactors seem like common sense, BUT, how many actually and conscientiously take action in daily life styles?
(by people, surrounding circumstances)?\n (周りの事情や人々)\nGossip, intimidatiion, Do you let it disturb you or to upset you?\n ゴシップや苛めなどで嫌かんを発生させますか。\nSelf-Respect / 自損 ... Do you have? \nResolution: Develop Thick-skin rather then Thin-skinned.\n Bounce off like tennis/ping pong ball, or water running off a duck’s back.\nTry to please most people most the time, but, unless utopia, can never please all people all the time.\n
Review: In the course of daily life, conscientiously remember and monitor the 3 components in the health triad\n毎日、起きるとその、恵まれているもう一日の命のためにこの健康の三角を良く考えて良い健康のバランスを実施する。 Adopt positive disposition to extent possible\n 。。 \nBody・肉体\n Eat, drink properly・適当な飲食生活\n sufficient sleep・十分に睡眠時間\n Proper daily exercise (even 10 minutes) 毎日運動時間10分でも\nSpirit・心\n Avoid stressful situations・ストレスのある物事を避ける\n Develop maintain self-respect, self-confidence・自損・自信の精神を培う(つちかう)\nYou body is your temple. good health maintainance => fundamental to life, existence \nWithout good health, won’t get very far in the pursuit of your defined success.\n
Okay, assuming your health situation under control, what next? \ncareer and business development.\nAnimals in the wild have survival instinct... they kill their prey in order to fill their stomach, to ensure another day of survival. \nHumans, similarly also have survival instinct. Difference?\n Pursuit of money! often regarded as ‘economic animal’ survival instinct.\n purchase essentials for our livelihood, our existence... food, shelter, and clothing. \n allows us to buy the things we want to buy, pay the bills we must pay, \n Reality of life, existence, survival. no free ticket to ride.\n To enjoy our defined ‘success’.... \n leisure time (sports, vacations, concerts, dating)\n luxury purchases (sports car, fashion coat, etc.)\nMoney not be the end, in and of itself. A means to accomplish end goals, objectives.\n
.... Develop our own income.\n\nGenerate capital (money):\n What? \n How? \n‘‘What’ factor.... everyone has freedom of choice, same equal opportunity: \n work harder... common laborer (Salary man), rush hour traffic, long hours, no family life・大変働く(サラリマン、肉体労働などのように) \n work/think smarter\n Entrepreneurship: Employ ingenuity to develop own business. \n Example: Michael Jackson... popular, famous, rich. Not born that way. Made it happen.\n (leverage: time, money, personal ingenuity, talent, etc.) 。時間、お金、巧妙(こうみょう)な考え\n‘How’ factor\n varies by goal / objective, personal interest.\n Basic processes apply\n Ingredients follow\n\n
What are the Ingredients? To become...\nEntrepreneur-minded, self-employed, own business.\nAny ideas? (Interactive: solicit student opinions)\n Motivation\n Confidence\n Ideas, Innovation\n Goals, accomplish individual steps to reach established target objective(s) \n Time Management\n Efficient Time Management\n Prioritization\n Challenge (prevailing concepts)\n Deal with temporary failure, setbacks.\n Dare to be different\n Perseverance / Failure\n Failure\n One cannot appreciate success, unless they have passed through failure \n Do not be afraid to fail.\n If confronted with failure, or discouragement, stand backup and continue.\n
Motivation - Incentive to do what is requiredBeing motivated is one of the greatest feelings in the world.  \nToo often the fire of determination and focus  will start to dim, and that’s when we need another dose of motivation!    \nSome people read books, others listen to music, or maybe some video clips\n\nFundamental ingredient in business (or any thing) “motivation”.\nSome want to get rich quick but not work for it. Every thing is cause and affect. No effort, no go anywhere.\naction versus non-action, or, laziness. \n No action, no results\nIf not motivated to action, no Reason to proceed any further. \nIf you want to achieve success....\n=> Take action!\n
Confidence\nSelf-Belief, believe in yourself\n‘Feel The Force'\n
Ideas and innovation\n\nInnovation is the creation of better or more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments, and society.\nInnovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of better and , as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.\n\nMonitor how you spend your time everyday. There are some things you enjoy to do, some things you don’t enjoy to do.Some things just become natural for you to do it takes no effort. Other things, require an effort because you don’t like to do them or it’s not in your flow.\nFlow: define your flow. what you enjoy doing most, then the money and opportunity will follow.\nBrainstorm a concept or Ian idea for a new product or a service.\nDefine, observe a need, a benefit, some unique service which nobody else has done.\n\n* example: anecdote\n- Costco discontinues delivery service; contemplating to discontinue membership: someone who can fulfill best service. One exampel of a possible business opportunity.\n
Goal Planning\n good goal planning means you can move on to planning the solutions.\nIdentify an Ambition you want to be successful in.\n Define your flow, your interests.\nWrite Down your goals. \n by writing down, powerful success tip to actually achieve them.\nWhy write down? Several useful side effects:\n Get very specific about what you want to accomplish, rather than just having a "vague idea".\n feel more motivated to achieve goals\n By keeping your written down goals somewhere that you will see them on a regular basis, you will be continually reminded o what you should be focusing on each day.\n writing down your goals, will make them more "real," as opposed to just keeping the thoughts in your head where neither you nor anyone else is ever actually exposed to them out in the 3-dimensional world.\n You will be able to use your written down goals in order to "reprogram" yourself for success.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Resources which might aid in motivating personal development:\nReading: \n “the secret”, (The law of attraction) \n “the power of now”\nDoing: \n participate in activities that are related to your flow, your line of interest, \n make connections you meet new people\n could possibly lead into new opportunity. \nBrainstorm\n mind mapping (free plane, Novamind), \n use pen, paper, and post-its\n
Resources to consider for entrepreneurial, business, investment ideas\n\nNew Ideas\nOnline E-commerce\n Flutterscape\n OCNK\nCapital Leverage: Trading & Investments vs. tradition savings\n FX\n Land Banking\n
So everyone, let me leave you with this message.\n(roll ‘Success Wars’ video)\n\nサクセスウォーズ:新しい希望\n\n昔々、地球という惑星に人が生まれました。 その人が\n\nY O U!\n\n\nDoor to success:\n Personal cultivation\n Entrepreneurship and monetizing creation\nKey to the door...\n YOU!\n ... are the one in control\n ... make the decisions\n YOU!\n ... are the origin of success!\nThe Power of Now\n\nGOOD LUCK!\n
