CRIMINOLOGY – YOGENDRA SINGH ©
Campu
ORGANISED CRIMES
• Criminals act in an organised manner and then try to gain economic and political
advantage.
• Loss caused to the society by such organisation may be unesteemable.
• Profit derived is huge as compared to the honest and hard working living.
• Organised crimes are of 2 kinds-
i. Predatory Crimes and
ii. Racketeering
PREDATORY CRIMES
• Crimes which are committed by two or more persons cooperatively for
their own gain including the monetary gain.
• Without any benefit to others.
• There is no element of quid-prp-quo.
• Robbery, theft, rape, counterfeiting of coins, etc are such offences.
• People are victims of these offences, they do not want these crimes to be
committed.
• Society in general has no sympathy for the doers of these offences.
• The criminals may have their links with the police, professional lawyers,
dishonest judicial members and politicians.
• The criminals not only harm the members of the society by their acts but
they also attempt to corrupt the administrative and judicial system.
Cont…
• Predatory crimes are committed with the desire to gain money, power or heroism.
• Factors responsible for predatory crimes are- property, non-fulfilment of even
basic needs after hard work by parents,, the glamour of richness, the modern
luxurious things etc. make the children feel that they cannot get these tings unless
they act in an organised manner.
• Also result of business world or racketeering when a man ultimately opts for the
crimes by forming the gangs.
RACKETEERING
• Rendering in an organised manner illicit goods or services to the consumers who
generally do legitimate activities.
• This crime because of providing services or goods may not appear to be harmful
but it may have far reaching consequences on the society.
• Gambling , illicit liquor trade and prostitution are the three recognised crimes in
this field despite the other important crimes like narcotic dealing, pornography,
abortion for ulterior purposes and smuggling of goods etc .
• Predatory crimes are unwelcome and never liked by the people as they never
benefit them, rather the people are victims of such cries.
• On the other hand, in racketeering there is some benefit to the public also and
therefore the people want such crimes as to meet out their demands legally is
very difficult.
Cont…
• Some demands of public cannot be satisfied in lawful manner because the law
may prohibit them.
• Those who provide with this demands may earn huge money.
Elements of Racketeering
i. With the materialistic advancement of society, the people want status and for
the status of money, avoidance of disgrace and bargaining power are necessary.
The desire to have things is therefore natural for them.
ii. To satisfy these desires in a lawful manner is not possible.
iii. These needs can be satisfied or there is a belief of an opportunity for the
satisfaction of these needs through racketeering.
iv. The individual, business or labour is often dependent on racketeering.
v. In many types of racketeering compulsion is an important factor which leads to
violence.
