ORLAN is a French performance artist born as Mireille Suzanne Francette Porte who reborn herself as ORLAN in 1971. She is known for works like The Reincarnation of Saint-Orlan from 1990-1993 where she used plastic surgery to modify her facial features to resemble famous artworks as a commentary on cultural standards of beauty. Daito Manabe is a Japanese performance artist who links his body to others through electric stimulation in response to music, creating temporary body modifications through self-inflicted pain. Both artists view the body as a medium and focus on the process over the final product while relinquishing control and viewing the body as a "body-machine".
