Oracle Corporation is a multinational computer technology corporation headquartered in Redwood City, California. It was founded in 1977 and specializes in developing and marketing database software and enterprise software. Larry Ellison is the current CEO. Oracle has grown significantly over the years through organic growth and acquisitions of companies to expand its software offerings.
Oracle continued to deliver innovation in the early 2000s despite downturns in the enterprise IT market. Major technical breakthroughs like Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Grid Computing, support for enterprise Linux, and Oracle Fusion positioned Oracle for continued leadership. Oracle cut costs by $1 billion while revenues grew 15% due to lower consulting services. Research and development expenses increased 20% while earnings per share also increased.

Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase are major relational database management systems. The document provides a brief history of each: Oracle was founded in 1977, DB2 originated at IBM in the 1970s, SQL Server originated from Sybase but Microsoft gained exclusive rights for its versions, and Sybase was founded in 1984 and later changed its name to Adaptive Server Enterprise to avoid confusion with SQL Server. The document also outlines some key features and developments for each database over time, including native XML support and grid computing capabilities.

The document discusses developments in computer technology in the 1970s and 1980s. It describes how large-scale and very large-scale integration allowed the entire processor and even simple full computers to fit on a single chip. It also mentions core memories being replaced by semiconductor memories and the dominance of high-speed vector processors like Cray 1, Cray XMP, and Cyber 205.

Alfresco: The Story of How Open Source Disrupted the ECM MarketJeff Potts
The early 90's saw the rise of powerful, inexpensive team collaboration software on one hand and huge document management systems on the other. Open source and cloud have brought us full circle. Today's businesses can implement extremely powerful productivity enhancing solutions quickly and easily. Alfresco capitalized on this trend. It used open source to get to the market quickly. It delivered functionality on par with legacy ECM as open source. Today, however, it is not just an open source alternative to things like Documentum and SharePoint, it is a visionary in the ECM market. This presentation tells that story, putting into context the things happening in ECM, collaboration, open source, and cloud from the 1990's to present day.

3. Oracle Corporation
Oracle Corporation is a U.S.-based multinational
computer technology corporation headquartered in
Redwood City, California, United States
CEO: Larry Ellison
Headquarters: Redwood City, CA, United States of
America
Founded: June 16, 1977, California, United States
Founders: Ed Oates, Larry Ellison, Bob Miner
4. History
Ellison took inspiration from the 1970 paper written
by Edgar F. Codd on relational database management
systems (RDBMS) named "A Relational Model of Data
for Large Shared Data Banks."
He heard about the IBM System R database from an
article in the IBM Research Journal provided by Ed
Oates (a future co-founder of Oracle). System R also
derived from Codd's theories, and Ellison wanted to
make Oracle's product compatible with System R, but
IBM stopped this by keeping the error codes for their
DBMS secret. Ellison co-founded Oracle Corporation
in 1977 with Bob Miner and Ed Oates under the
name Software Development Laboratories (SDL).
5. In 1979 SDL changed its name to Relational Software,
Inc.(RSI). In 1982, RSI renamed itself Oracle Systems
Corporation to align itself more closely with its flagship
product Oracle Database. At this stage Bob Miner served as
the company's senior programmer. In 1995, Oracle Systems
Corporation changed its name to Oracle
Corporation. The company is officially named Oracle, but
sometimes referred to as Oracle Corporation, which is in
fact the name of the holding company.
Part of Oracle Corporation's early success arose from using
the C programming language to implement its products.
This eased porting to different operating systems (most of
which support C).
