Presentation I did at Social Bar at the 4th of November in Berlin. It's a 10 minute talk about open government data for people who are not familiar with the topic.
Looking at the local to global Open Gov - Open Data ecosystem. Lots of moving parts - challenges & opportunities. Presented at the Open Data Day Toronto conference preceding the Open Data TO Hackathon
It's important to recognize that open data lives within an open government framework and that open government contributes to the goals of a smart/intelligent community. And when we say community ... it is also a continuum from local to global proportions.
Big data is exploding exponentially and providing many opportunities for entrepreneurs. Open Data has become a global movement with McKinsey Institute study suggesting a $3 trillion economic value potential from open data. A number of "smart opportunities" are explored.
Jury Konga presented on the opportunities of big and open data. Big data refers to large, complex data sets that are difficult to analyze using traditional data management tools. Open data is data that is freely available for anyone to use without restrictions. Konga discussed how big and open data can power smart cities by enabling real-time data collection and analysis to improve services like transportation, energy usage, and environmental monitoring. Konga also outlined opportunities for integrated service delivery across different levels of government using open data as well as fueling innovation through making more commercial and scientific data openly available. In conclusion, Konga stated that big and open data present many opportunities to make positive changes and improvements, but these opportunities are just beginning to be explored
The document discusses digital futures and community ecosystems. It notes that data volumes are growing exponentially and open data provides opportunities for innovation. It outlines different ecosystems like natural, social, economic and digital ecosystems. The digital community ecosystem has many interconnected parts. Emerging technologies like social media, analytics, cloud computing and the internet of everything will impact digital futures. Open data fuels the development of intelligent communities. Sustainable digital communities require metrics, partnerships and leadership across sectors.
Infoactivism refers to using digital technologies and information to enhance advocacy and social or political change campaigns. It involves tactics like mobilizing people, visualizing issues, adding humor, managing contacts, simplifying complex data, and investigating and exposing information. Digital activism allows activists to spread information quickly through social media and websites, monitor events through citizen reporting, and coordinate actions online. While it provides new capabilities, digital activists must also address issues like privacy, security, and credibility of information.
The document discusses net neutrality and its importance for innovation on the internet. It argues that an open, free, and fair internet without interference from internet service providers allows for new ideas and services to be created, as seen with companies like Google, Facebook, and the Human Genome Project. The author was among several tech executives who advocated to keep net neutrality rules in place so that the internet remains open for creativity and new developments that can improve life.

This document summarizes a presentation given in November 2010 on how Canada can pass meaningful copyright reform legislation. It discusses that the last major copyright reform was in 1997 and the issues it needs to address have significantly changed with digital technologies. It argues Canada needs to learn from other countries' experiences and set clear goals to streamline the process. Consensus needs to be found between owners and internet service providers to develop balanced laws addressing online piracy while providing legal certainty.
At Data Journalism UK 2016 Andy Dickinson provided an insight into the ways that data journalism is being used at a hyperlocal level. Here are his slides.
Canada is a data and technological society. There is no sector that is uninformed by data or unmediated by code, algorithms, software and infrastructure. Consider the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities, and precision agriculture; or smart fisheries, forestry, and energy and of course governing. In a data based and technological society, leadership is the responsibility of all citizens, a parent, teacher, scholar, administrator, public servant, nurse and doctor, mayor and councillor, fisher, builder, business person, industrialist, MP, MLA, PM, and so on. In other words leadership is distributed and requires people power. This form of citizenship, according to Andrew Feenberg, Canada Research Chair in Philosophy of Technology, requires agency, knowledge and the capacity to act or power. In this GovMaker Keynote I will introduce the concept of technological citizenship, I will discuss what principled public interest governing might look like, and how we might go about critically applying philosophy in our daily practice. In terms of practice I will discuss innovative policy and regulation such as the right to repair movement, EU legislation such as the right to explanation, data subjects and the right to access and also data sovereignty from a globalization and an indigenous perspective.

This document discusses the rise of big data and the data economy. It begins by comparing the growth of transportation infrastructure like highways and the internet to the growth of digital data. It then discusses the various types of data being created, including website data, social media data, mobile data, and machine data. It explains that while the scale of data seems vast, most individual data points are worthless alone. The value comes from combining different types of data to generate new insights. It concludes by looking briefly at the history of data analysis and hypothesis testing, and how our approaches may need to evolve to analyze the vast amounts of data now available.

Both hackathons involve multiple phases of development, feedback, and prizes for the top solutions.
Ushahidi is open source software that allows for real-time crowdsourcing and mapping of information. It was originally developed in 2008 to map reports of violence in Kenya following post-election conflicts when traditional media failed. Ushahidi means "testimony" in Swahili and allows individuals to share stories by reporting incidents on a map. It has since been used for crisis response, election monitoring, community mapping and more. The platform lowers barriers for people to share information and their stories in real-time.
Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana of the National Innovation Agency discusses the importance of data-driven innovation and the emerging data economy. Processing and analyzing large volumes of data, known as big data, can lead to new knowledge, drive value creation, and foster new products and markets. This trend of data-driven innovation is becoming more crucial as it enables understanding social movements by funding them through crowdfunding and mobilizing them through social media. It also reveals unprecedented hidden facts and engages people, businesses, locations and machines in a single space, outreaching to indefinite potentials of innovation.
The document summarizes the book "The Data Revolution" by Rob Kitchin. Open Data in Agrifood:
A Tutorial
There are three main movements that contributed to the growth of open data: open data, linked open data, and FAIR principles. Open data originated from efforts to increase government transparency and release of public sector information. Linked open data aims to connect related data through web links. FAIR principles specify that data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. In agrifood, open data comes from government statistics, earth observation satellites, academic research, and crowd-sourced sources. It covers topics like weather, crop yields, and food recalls. Open data is increasingly seen as important infrastructure that can benefit decision making and innovation across the agrifood sector.
The future of online government will likely see:
1) Government services becoming more invisible and only contacting citizens when needed to reduce issues or for additional input.
2) Digital technology challenging nation states as corporations and individuals push boundaries, requiring governments to thoughtfully embrace rather than resist digital change.
3) Potential for governments to have live data on public opinions, but also needing to help society progress on issues where majority opinions could hinder equality. Overall, governments must adapt to constant digital transformation and an increasingly networked world.
Convergence Partners has released its latest research report on big data and its meaning for Africa. The report argues that big data poses a threat to those it overlooks, namely a large percentage of Africa’s populace, who remain on big data’s periphery.
This document summarizes how the role of data has grown exponentially since 2010 when the term "big data" was introduced. Some key points made are:
- The amount of data in the world doubles every two years and is predicted to reach 44 zettabytes by 2020.
- 80% of data is now unstructured, presenting new data management challenges.
- Many governments have made more data openly accessible, and countries with more open data tend to be less corrupt.
- Advances in data and artificial intelligence are automating many jobs but also improving recruitment, project management, and other business functions for companies that master how to leverage data.
