Whitepaper: Running Oracle e-Business Suite Database on Oracle Database Appli...Maris Elsins
This is the whitepaper for my Collaborate 13 presentation with the same title. It describes how Pythian completed a migration project of eBS R12 database top ODA (Oracle Appliance Kit v2.2).
OUG Harmony 2012 - Using SQL Plan Baselines for Performance TestingMaris Elsins
My presentation (OUG Harmony 2012 in Tallin) on how to use SQL Plan baselines to assess the completeness of testing. I also have a white-paper on this topic, see the whitepapers section.
Database as a Service on the Oracle Database Appliance PlatformMaris Elsins
Speaker: Marc Fielding, Co-speaker: Maris Elsins.
Oracle Database Appliance provides a robust, highly-available, cost-effective, and surprisingly scalable platform for database as a service environment. By leveraging Oracle Enterprise Manager's self-service features, databases can be provisioned on a self-service basis to a cluster of Oracle Database Appliance machines. Discover how multiple ODA devices can be managed together to provide both high availability and incremental, cost-effective scalability. Hear real-world lessons learned from successful database consolidation implementations.
Surviving the Crisis With the Help of Oracle Database Resource ManagerMaris Elsins
The document summarizes the results of performance testing done to evaluate the impact of enabling Oracle Database Resource Manager. Testing was done on Oracle 11.1 and 11.2 databases under different workload scenarios both with and without a resource manager plan. The results showed that in CPU-intensive workloads, enabling even a simple resource manager plan to evenly distribute sessions among consumer groups had negligible performance impact, with total execution times varying by only seconds.
Running E-Business Suite Database on Oracle Database ApplianceMaris Elsins
This is my Collaborate 13 presentation.
ODA is a pre-configured, simple setup, high performance engineered system running 11gR2 cluster. It is a great choice for small to medium sized DBs and if you wish it can be used for Oracle EBS DB too. This paper will show you how the standardized configuration of ODA can be adjusted to comply with the specific requirements of e-Business Suite without sacrificing ODA’s flexibility and supportability. The paper will also share author’s experience migrating, running and maintaining R12 database tier on ODA.

This is my article from NoCOUG Journal in August 2012. It discusses advanced approach of using SPM for quality assessment of performance testing and identification of changes.
Simplify Consolidation with Oracle Database 12cMaris Elsins
This document discusses Oracle Database 12c's Multitenant architecture, which allows for more efficient consolidation of multiple pluggable databases (PDBs) within a single container database (CDB). Key benefits include more flexible provisioning of new databases, simplified cloning and upgrades done at the CDB level, and improved resource utilization through workload separation. While Multitenant is only available in the Enterprise Edition, the plug/unplug functionality can provide benefits even for single-tenant use cases.
Mining the AWR: Alternative Methods for Identification of the Top SQLs (inclu...Maris Elsins
A typical tuning session on a resource-constrained system starts with a search for "low-hanging fruit." In a CPU-bound database system, it would be the SQL that uses CPU the most, in an I/O-bound system, the SQL doing the most physical reads, and so on. Tuning the TOP statements often allows us to free large portions of the utilized resources and remove bottlenecks. Often, we can use AWR reports to quickly identify the SQL_IDs of the top statements in the database. But what if the AWR report reveals no "low-hanging fruit," and the resource usage is evenly distributed among multiple statements? Where do we start? Is there a better way to identify the starting point for the tuning of a resource-bound system?
This presentation will explain when the AWR reports are misleading and how we can take a look at the data stored in AWR from a different angle to determine the top consumers. Discussion will include a practical demonstration using scripts for AWR mining that attendees can apply to their own challenging database performance tuning problems.

C15LV: Ins and Outs of Concurrent Processing Configuration in Oracle e-Busine...Maris Elsins
Concurrent processing is a critical functionality in any e-Business Suite system. DBAs will recognize problems like jammed concurrent manager queues, failover problems, load balancing issues causing one node to be more loaded that another, performance overhead or even an unwanted bounce of the managers when incompatibility rules change. It is important to understand the configuration of a reliable concurrent processing environment, therefore, topics like PCP, node affinity, load balancing, optimal cache size and sleep time settings, separation of manager duties, request groups and others will be discussed.
DB12c: All You Need to Know About the Resource ManagerMaris Elsins
This presentation is different from the previous uploads as SLOB was used for the testing.
Oracle Database 12c Multitenant provides the highest level of Oracle Database resource efficiency, driven by an improved resource manager. The 12c resource manager effectively allocates resources both within a single database and between multiple pluggable databases in a container. This presentation will review new features of the 12c resource manager, provide guidelines for migration of your current resource management plan to 12c, and will also look into how much overhead the resource manager introduces.
RMAN backup scripts should be improved in the following ways:
1. Log backups thoroughly and send failure alerts to ensure recoverability.
2. Avoid relying on a single backup and use redundancy to protect against data loss.
3. Back up control files last and do not delete archives until backups are complete.
4. Check backups regularly to ensure they meet recovery needs.
AWR Difference Reports are very helpful when overall performance information about two different periods needs to be compared. However, if the requirement is to review the trends of performance of a specific query, average length of a particular wait event, or different of a specific statistic over time with a purpose of identification of peaks, the AWR Difference Reports are of little help. This presentation will concentrate on techniques of extracting information from the Automatic Workload Repository to analyze how things change over time, which is useful for both - forecasting and identification of specific time periods when issues affect specific areas of the database.
