Running head: IMMIGRATION 1 Surname 1 Name: Professor: Course Title: Date: Immigration a Necessary ‘Evil’ Immigration now more than ever has been on the rise and in fact in the last forty years, immigration has been a demographic shift historically. More so, we can relate with the issue of immigration since it is the belief that America is a product of immigration. Though the issue of immigration has received mixed reaction from different people, technically, everyone in America is affected by immigration either directly or indirectly. Whether due to the large population of immigrants in the country or the jobs immigrants have secured in the country, immigration influences America greatly. Immigration has influenced the growth and development of America`s economy contrary to the perception of the critics of immigration. America also referred to as a nation of immigrants is a land that has been founded, and it’s very own people that love it. In this view, America can be viewed as the land of opportunity and attracts attention from across the globe. Individuals strive to get a share of the opportunities in this land for the good of their families, which has contributed to the rise in immigration. Immigration has in many ways influenced America, furthermore, the English language that is the formal language of the land is of German origin. Immigration and its influence to the American culture, therefore, can be traced far back in history. It would, therefore, be the reason America is termed as the land of immigrants since a large portion of its population is made up of immigrants (Huntington, 467). Subsequently, it is observed that most of the individuals in the country have a German, Asian or other ancestral origins. Immigration has contributed to the diversity that the American community enjoys in the modern day. The diversity of cultures and customs contribute to the rich American customs making it more special than other cultures and contributes to the modernization of the country. Besides the contribution to the American culture, immigration has led to the introduction of the skilled and experienced workforce (Jacoby, 422). Most of the immigrants come from developing countries and are motivated to work due to the poor living conditions in the countries. In fact, the motivation among most immigrants is to secure a sustainable job since they are not entitled to benefits. Also, the level of entrepreneurship for most of the immigrants is astonishing from the first, second generation even beyond. It is recorded that the Asian and Latino business startup rate stands at four times higher than the average American. Statistics show that the business startups among the immigrants is at a high level than that of the average American (Jacoby, 420). The effect is that it indicates the enthusiasm among most of the immigrants as goal oriented towards earning a decent living. It is inevitable therefore to realize that as business contributes to the gr.

Lecture Notes Immigration and the United States Chapter 4 Immigration and the United States The history of the United States is the history of immigration. Immigration in the U.S. was at its highest during the 1880-1920 period. Xenophobia The fear of strangers or foreigners. Nativism beliefs and policies favoring native-born citizens over immigrants. Catholics and Irish Immigrants Catholics in general and the Irish immigrants were the first Europeans to be ill-treated. Irish did not suffer their maltreatment in silence. To many whites, the Irish were worst than Blacks because the Blacks at least knew their place. Chinese Immigrants Sinophobes People who fear anything associated with China. White settlers found Chinese immigrants and their customs and religion difficult to understand. Railroad provided the greatest demand for Chinese labor in the 1860s. In 1882 Congress enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act which outlawed Chinese immigration for 10 years. The National Origin System Attempt at blocking the growing immigration from southern European countries such as from Italy and Greece. Gave preference to English speaking people from Western Europe. The 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act The goals of this act were to reunite families and protect the American labor market. It also listed the rules for becoming a citizen of the United States or Naturalization. The Brain Drain The Brain Drain is the immigration to the United States of skilled workers, professionals, and technicians who are needed by their home countries. We protest immigration but we do not mind as long as it is someone making a valuable contribution to our society. Population Growth In the 1990s legal immigration accounted for one fourth of the nations growth. California is the most extreme case of projected growth. It is expected to grow from 32 million people in 1995 to more than 49 million people by 2025. Illegal Immigration Illegal immigrants and their families come to this country in search of higher-paying jobs than their home countries can provide. Most immigrants work in jobs that many U.S. born citizens do not want. The majority of illegal immigrants in the U.S. come from Mexico. In 2002 there were more than 8 Million illegal immigrants in the U.S. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 Hiring of illegal immigrants became illegal and provided fines and prison sentences to employers who did not comply. Also made it illegal for employers to discriminate against legal immigrants because of their not being U.S. citizens. Economic Impact of Immigration In some areas, heavy immigration can drain community resources. In some areas, immigration may be an economic burden and create unwanted competition for jobs. On a positive note, Immigrants can help revitalize the local economy in some instances. California’s Proposition 187 An attempt to reduce illegal immig ...

"We Are All Immigrants" is a presentation that speaks to the urgent need to align our immigration policy with our job-creation goals. We can create jobs in America --- lots of them---- by flicking the switch and welcoming the job-creators from abroad. Compared to American-born, Immigrants are twice as likely to start a business, twice as likely to invent a new product, more likely have an advanced degree, and more likely to have the linguistic, cultural, and networking skill-set to sell U.S. products and services abroad. Immigrants are America's competitive advantage. It's time we stopped treating them like dirt. I've been talking about this for over 10 years! hoping that someone would listen.... and help save my hometown (Cleveland) and country! I'm an immigration lawyer ---- I know how broken the system is --- and how to FIX IT! I co-wrote a book, "Immigrant, Inc." to tell these stories. I co-wrote the immigration policy for the 30 chambers of commerce from Chicago to Pittsburgh. Awareness is increasing, through programs such as Global Michigan, Global Detroit, Global Cleveland, Global Pittsburgh, and others. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is one of the biggest champions of the notion that smart immigration reform can CREATE jobs in America and help revitalize its cities.
