UP302 is a novel tyrosinase inhibitor isolated from the plant Dianella ensifolia. It inhibits tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in melanin production, with much higher potency than the common inhibitor Kojic acid. In cell and tissue studies, UP302 strongly suppresses melanin formation in mouse melanoma cells and human melanocytes at low concentrations, without toxic effects. When applied topically to a reconstructed skin model, 0.1% UP302 significantly lightened the skin by decreasing melanin production, comparable to a higher concentration of Kojic acid, and did not affect cell viability or tissue morphology. UP302 shows potential as a safe and effective skin whitening agent.

Coming to Appalachian is
such an incredible opportunity.
I couldn’t have asked for better
coaches to learn from and
teach with, and who embody
true leadership, determination,
motivation, competition, and
passion for this team and the
university. This
group of girls has
exponential potential,
and their desire to
‘be better than they
were yesterday’ (our
new team motto) is
tangible everyday
at practice. The
willingness to push
their limits and reach
new heights both
individually and
together as a unit is
incredibly inspiring.
What I am most looking
forward to helping the team with
is their confidence, composure,
and creating an environment
where they learn something new
everyday. I want each player to
reflect on their time spent at
Appalachian and feel they had the
resources available to develop into
the best player and person they
can be, and to feel that they were
not just pushed, but supported and
encouraged to try new things to
continue the learning process.
Some goals I have for the
girls this season is to have at least
one big win, surprise themselves
with how much they
can hold their own, and win more
games than last year! I would love
to see us score at least 3 goals a
game, and for our defense to hold
opponents to no more than 3 goals
a game.

Coming to App State I am
excited to explore a new area of
the country that has a lot to offer
in way of nature and beauty. I
have a passion for field hockey
and I am super excited to be a part
of a program where we all can
build something together, finding
the tradition and reputation that
App State Field Hockey deserves.
I’m looking forward to
helping the team grow as
a whole and individually.
In addition, I look forward
to seeing the team and
individual players improve.
It is so rewarding, as a
coach, when I see players
using the skills and
techniques that we taught
them and seeing them
work together as a team on
the field. My goal for the
season is to generate a sustained
attack where we generate at least
a goal per game. Also, to improve
on the team record from last
year. Overall, I’m really excited
and thankful for the opportunity
to be a part of Appalachian State
University’s Field Hockey Team.

this, we started out the year by
setting the tone of our actions
and went out Hospitality House
to volunteer our time during
our pre-pre-season.
The team decided to
come a week early to check in
with each other, go over the
run tests and help each other
breathe before the big day
came. Knowing your teammates
are pushing themselves beside
you and believe that you can
pass the test helps more than
most can understand. The
support from a teammate in
uncomparable and coming a
week early helps reassure you
through those moments of
weakness.
While working out was
a key reason for this, we also
wanted to have some time for
team bonding and making sure
the freshmen felt comfortable
before the reason pre-season
began.
There are many ways
the team could have chosen to
and doing community
service together was by
far the most rewarding.
We all had such a good
time watching everyone
do different tasks
that some of us never
thought we would
witness the other do.
Like myself for instance,
standing on top of a
hill digging weeds out
with a garden hoe.
Probably something
I can honestly say my
teammates would not
expect to see me do!
We got to
enjoy ourselves while
we were helping as well.
Exploring the green house
and tasting different
vegetables straight
from the vine. It was an
experience for sure and
one that we got to help
others while doing so.
There are few things that
beat enjoying yourself
and helping others!

Senior Spotlights: Anna, Carol, Char, Cep, Han, & Rob
Written by: Robbi Jensen

As the senior class is
preparing for their last semester
of college, and trying to figure
out their place in the real
world- I thought it would be fun
to reflect back on our favorite
moments and qualities each of
them posses.
First, Anna Copsey.
Anna came into App as the
quiet and shy senior that did
not have much to say but was
always extremely focused.
Running was an immediate
attribute to the team and she
proved to be versatile on the
field, and selfless. Anna is also
one of the most loyal people
our teammates have met and
would do anything for anyone,
at any time. Her devotion to her
teammates will truly be missed.
Caroline Phillips. While
there are few words to describe
Carol, I’m going to give it a shot.
Carol is one of the loudest,
funniest, and most
determined people
we have ever met.
She was the first
person to get the
team laughing on
an early Tuesday
morning and always
made sure everyone was
laughing as we walked off the
field. Her determination to score
was contagious to the team and
her actions helped motivate
those around her, even when she
did not realize it. Carol’s strong and
uncomparable personality will be
missed greatly as the transition to
next year begins.
Charlotte Kirwin. The first
word that come to mind when
thinking of Char has to be, smiles!
Char is such a happy and greatful
person. She is the definition of the
athete that takes being on this team
as a priviledge. Char was always
open to playing wherever the team
saw fit, and that passion for the
team is something she will leave all
of her teammates with. Char was
also one of our most consistent
runners and was so in shape herself,
she was our biggest motivator on
the field. I know the team will miss
he encouragement.
Christina Ceppi. Cep Cep
has been our wall for the last three
years. Cep has taken responsibilty
for the most mentally challenging
position for three years and grown
substantially with every
game. Her improvement
each day led the team to
strive to grow as much
as a field player, as
she did our goalie. Her
accountability for each
of us was always valued
and will be missed. Having
someone on a team that holds
such a high standard for themself is
something that cannot be taught.
Hanna French, our olympic
track star. Han stepped up into a
coaching role of her own this
year and helped tremendously
on and off the field. Her desire
to see everyone excel in the
transition to a much higher
fitness expectation was unlike
any other. She coached and
guided those around her
through runs, and continued
that motivation on the field. Han
was the senior that wanted to
see everyone perform at their
peak level everyday and that
expectation will stay, even as
Han moves into the real world.
As for me, Robbi. I just
want to thank this family again.
Teammates, coaches, parents
and fans alike for keeping me a
part of this team. Watching each
teammate improve throughout
the season, and having them
support me on the sideline the
way they did, has helped me
grow as a person more than
anyone will ever know. My time
at Appalachian has been the
best four years of my life and I
have this special team to thank
for it. I love you all.

A note from the editor-
I would like to say thank you one more time
to everyone that has supported this team
throughout so much change and growth.
The direction the program is headed leaves
me at a shortage for words, but I, along with
my fellow seniors, am extremely excited to
see the direction it goes. Each member of
this team is vital to its success and Meg, Ker,
and Dan are doing a fantastic job helping
each player develop into our own roles on
and off the field.
We hope to see as many alumni in the
Spring as possible. It is going to be a great
weekend full of memories and fun. The
seniors are excited to take on the girls in
our first ever alumni game :)
Thank you all again for allowing me to do
my role and start this newsletter. Now it is
time for me to start receiving copies of my
own! I love you, my ASUFH family!
