On July 27, 1996, a bomb went off at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia at the Summer Olympics. Security guard Richard Jewell had observed and reported the bomb. He subsequently became the prime suspect in the case which was widely reported internationally. Jewell was later exonerated after a serial bomber named Eric Rudolph, who was responsible for several bombings over multiple states, was arrested and charged. Jewell subsequently sued the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper, and his former employer, Piedmont College. He settled a suit with CNN for an undisclosed amount of money. Jewell considered filing suit against the FBI but declined, believing it would be futile. This situation has resulted in a greater concern over how people are identified when they may, or may not, be material to a criminal investigation. Based on this situation as a historical backdrop, research a minimum of two scholarly and/or credible sources on another investigation where an individual is not identified as a suspect but, rather, by another term such as “a person of interest” by law enforcement. been other very high-profile cases involving children and teens that have generated a vigorous international debate on needed changes in the
system of justice as applied to young people.
In Birmingham, Alabama, an 8-year-old boy was charged with “viciously” attacking a toddler, Kelci Lewis, and murdering her (Binder, 2015).
The law enforcement officials announced their intent to prosecute the boy as an adult. The accused perpetrator would be among the youngest
criminal court victims in U.S. history. The 8-year-old became angry and violent, and beat the toddler because she would not stop crying. Kelci
suffered severe head trauma and injuries to major internal organs. The victim’s mother, Katerra Lewis, left the two children alone so that she
could attend a local nightclub. There were six other children under the age of 8 also left alone in the house. Within days, the mother was
arrested and charged with manslaughter and released on a $15,000 bond after being in custody for less than 90 minutes. The 8-year-old was
held by the Alabama Department of Human Services pending his adjudication.
A very disturbing video showed a Richland County, South Carolina, deputy sheriff grab a 16-year-old African American teen by her hair,
flipping her out her chair and tossing her across the classroom. The officer wrapped his forearm around her neck and then handcuffed her. It is
alleged that the teen refused to surrender her phone to the deputy. She received multiple injuries from the encounter. The classroom teacher and
a vice principal said that they believed the police response was “appropriate.” The deputy was suspended and subsequently fired after the
Richland County Sheriff reviewed the video. There is a civil suit against the school district and the sheriff’s department for the injuries that
were sustained (Strehike, 2015).

Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. When Jonas had been questioned by the police at the station, he claimed he knew nothing of the incident, and the police have no evidence tying Jonas to the disappearance or murder. Analyze these facts using ethical concepts or concerns from Module 8. (You are not evaluating elements of murder, or due process issues for example.)
2. District Attorney Schultz has brought charges against three players of the University football team. They have been charged with raping a stripper at a party attended by team members. The case has received much publicity and the media have discovered that the three players have a history of violence towards women. (Last year, two other women claimed they had been raped, but the cell phone video showing the forced sex had been excluded based on an illegal police search, and the players were found "not guilty.”) Shultz believes these players are guilty, and has given approximately 60 media interviews on the case. Schultz has also been campaigning for reelection, and a conviction here would go a long way. Unfortunately for Schultz, the DNA tests he ran do not match any of the three players to the victim’s assault. When he questioned her about this, the victim made contradictory statements, and she had no other evidence to corroborate the events. In fact, while her statements confirm that they raped her, she admitted to having consensual sex with two other men at the party, which weakens the case. Schultz decides to not tell anyone about the DNA results unless asked, and instructs the victim/witness to deny the other sexual encounters at trial. - 1. On July 27, 1996, a bomb went off at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Georgia at the Summer Olympics. Security guard Richard Jewell had observed and reported the bomb. He subsequently became the prime suspect in the case which was widely reported internationally. Jewell was later exonerated after a serial bomber named Eric Rudolph, who was responsible for several bombings over multiple states, was arrested and charged. Jewell subsequently sued the Atlanta Journal- Constitution newspaper, and his former employer, Piedmont College. He settled a suit with CNN for an undisclosed amount of money. Jewell considered filing suit against the FBI but declined, believing it would be futile. This situation has resulted in a greater concern over how people are identified when they may, or may not, be material to a criminal investigation. Based on this situation as a historical backdrop, research a minimum of two scholarly and/or credible sources on another investigation where an individual is not identified as a suspect but, rather, by another term such as “a person of interest” by law enforcement. Analyze how the chosen situation was handled differently from the Jewell case and what, if any, influence the Jewell case may have had on the handling chosen situation. Analyze legal policies and Constitutional mandates that pertain to privacy rights. Explain the responsibility law enforcement personnel have in protecting privacy rights while doing their jobs. Evaluate ethical issues as they pertain to law enforcement agency operations, in this case specifically to the identification of suspects in the media. Provide an example of how criminal events may be “tried in the court of public opinion” due to the media coverage. Suggest a remedy for how this can be mitigated.
