5. INSIGHTS
Elderly people desire a friendly transit experience that provides
them customized information and simplifies the complex steps
of finding directions.
Instead of overwhelming the elderly people, the system should
sprinkle encouragement for them to feel more comfortable using
the public transportation.

Appendix
Today I’m going to talk about Omni, the friendly transit experience for the elderly. But first I want to talk about the story behind Omni.
And for elderly people, public transportation is probably their main way of traveling in the city. But there are still lots of frustrations around the public transportation, especially for the elderly people.Waiting for bus is frustrating, trying to understand the map is frustrating, not knowing which bus can take me home is frustrating.
You might think smart phones can do this, but actually, lots of elderly people don’t have a smart phone,Even if they have one, they might just use it to receive calls without using other functions.
Linda, one of my research interviewees told me thatMr. Shin saidAnd Eileen, who lived in SF for more than 30 years.
From my research, I understand that
So the goal for my design, is to think aboutADD FRIENDLY ELEMENT
I want to create something intuitive, intimate and informative
This is why I designed Omni, a friendly transit system for the elderly.//Especially for elderly WHO uses the public transportation frequently.
Omni consists of two parts. The Omni Card, and the Omni Stop
It’s like an ATM card. But instead of withdrawing money when you are out of money, you withdraw the direction to your destination when you get lost
So from the video you can see, Omni card has a simply display showing the list of your places. (show the physical model)With the push button you can browse through your places simply by pressing it (press at the same time)intimacy
With the Omni card you can swipe on the card reader at the Omni bus stop, to access your personal information.Intuitive – same model as clipper card -> swipe
The card provides gentle vibration to remind you to get off at the right stop.informative
So here’s the ecosystem of Omni: !There’s the website whereYou can sign up an Omni account and apply for an Omni Card. The account is linked to your card with your personal list of placesYou use your Omni card as an identification for Omni stops and access the information you need. After picking the bus you are going to take, the card knows where you are going, and communicate to the bus via bluetooth. The bus with the GPS can know if you are near your destination, and tells your card to send a reminder to you.So what problem is omni trying to solve?
All places:Omni system spreads around the city to provide instant help for people in need. All knowing:Omni system connects to all the real-time information, and only shows what you need when you need it.
An Omni card is a personal transit pass with your personal list of places in it. You can press the button to browse through your places, and use it to interact with the Omni Stop.

With you Omni card, you can simply pick a place to go on the card, and swipe on a Omni stop to get the direction to that place. Omni stop has an interactive interface that shows you which bus to take, and how long you have to wait.
