The textile industry is the backbone of Pakistan's economy, contributing approximately 46% to total output and 8.5% to GDP. Pakistan is the 4th largest cotton producer in Asia and the 3rd largest exporter of raw cotton. The textile industry provides employment for 38% of Pakistan's workforce and contributes over 60% to the country's total exports, which amounted to around $5.2 billion USD in 2013. However, the industry has faced a decline in growth rate due to issues like the global recession, security concerns, and high production costs from increased energy prices.
