This study estimates the impact of drought tolerant (DT) maize varieties on food security in southern Africa. DT maize varieties are a promising technology that can help smallholder farmers adapt to drought risks. Even though DT maize varieties have shown better yield potential under experimental conditions, their impact on smallholder farms across the region has not been evaluated. We use new household data (collected in 2015) from surveys of 2,995 farm households in five countries (Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) to measure the impact of DT maize varieties on food security. We use households past five-year experience of drought as an instrumental variable that triggers the decision to adopt DT maize varieties and an endogenous switching regression to correct for the endogeneity of the DT adoption in estimating maize production. We also evaluate whether a household tends to be more food secure after growing a DT maize variety. Our results show that households that grew DT maize varieties had 600 kg/ha more maize than households that did not grow the DT maize varieties. Given a household of four people, with human maize consumption averaging 91 kg per capita per year, this additional maize provides an extra 1.6 months of food. Given the region's vulnerability to climate change, DT maize varieties prove to be an important adaptation option. We, therefore, recommend that governments in southern Africa promote DT maize varieties to reduce household vulnerability to climatic risks and improve food security.

There are two main species of oil palm - Elaeis guineensis originating from Africa and Elaeis oleifera from Central and South America. Oil palms are cultivated on large plantations and smallholder farms, with over 4 million hectares in Malaysia devoted to oil palm production, making Malaysia the world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil. These unique sweeteners taste like sugar but have special advantages. Polyols serve as useful sugar replacers in a wide range of products as part of a sugar free diet. These sugar free foods and products include chewing gums, candies, ice cream, baked goods and fruit spreads. In addition, they function well in fillings and frostings, canned fruits, beverages, yogurt and tabletop sweeteners. Polyols are a group of low-digestible carbohydrates derived from the hydrogenation of their sugar or syrup source (e.g., lactitol from lactose). These unique sweeteners taste like sugar but have special advantages. Polyols serve as useful sugar replacers in a wide range of products as part of a sugar free diet. These sugar free foods and products include chewing gums, candies, ice cream, baked goods and fruit spreads. In addition, they function well in fillings and frostings, canned fruits, beverages, yogurt and tabletop sweeteners. They are also used in toothpastes, mouthwashes and pharmaceutical products such as cough syrups and throat lozenges.

Rainfed agriculture in India plays an important role in the livelihoods of many rural households in semi-arid regions. These households are highly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate variability and change especially drought and heat stress. Government of India is investing and promoting different adaptation options to overcome the adverse impacts of climate variability in rainfed farming and to build household resilience through different programs. The adoption of one or two CSA technologies or practices may increase the crop yield or resource use efficiency but does not improve the overall farm household resilience to persistent climate variability or change e in the future. So under a multi-disciplinary project called AgMIP (http://www.agmip.org/), a location specific regional climate smart adaptation package (including biophysical, socio-economic and policy components) was developed through series of stakeholder consultation in the region and evaluated to understand the potential of the CSA package in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
Cloud seeding presentation
- Cloud seeding experiments have been conducted in India since the 1950s to enhance rainfall. The state of Andhra Pradesh has carried out extensive cloud seeding operations from 2003-2009.
- Over these years, cloud seeding was conducted across hundreds of mandals using aircraft to disperse silver iodide flares into rain-producing clouds. Post-seeding verification with local officials found rainfall increases in many seeded areas.
- Monitoring of the operations was done using radar stations and pilot logs to track seeded clouds and assess seeding impacts on precipitation. The results suggest that cloud seeding can effectively increase rainfall in drought-prone regions of Andhra Pradesh.
