Definition 
A social enterprise (often also referred to as a 
social business) is an organization that seeks to 
meet multiple bottom lines: financial, social 
and/or environmental. 
In other words 
A social business is an organization that wants to make a 
social or environmental impact while still gaining profit.

individual with an innovative idea on how to 
resolve causes of social and/or environmental 
problems through an entrepreneurially-oriented 
entity that is either financially independent or

sustainability.

Malnutrition: How to Fight it?

All around the world there are still 
200+ million starving children 
For the past 80 years, the treatment of malnutrition had 
been the domain of doctors and nurses. Sick children 
were admitted for several weeks to hospital tents and 
health centers that were often crowded and 
understaffed. This in-patient approach was expensive, 
labor-intensive, and created a number of practical 
problems. Most importantly, recovery rates with this 
approach were just 25-40%. 
Nutrition Packs can dramatically change this 
The development of nutrition packs has revolutionized 
the treatment of malnutrition. As highly fortified, 
nutrient dense pastes made from grains, nuts, seeds, 
milk powder, sugar, oil, vitamins, and minerals, nutrition 
packs are ready to eat straight from the package. They 
are precooked, portable, and do not require water for 
preparation or refrigeration for preservation.
TWO DEGREES (III) 
Nutrition Packs: a Solution that Works

Nutrition packs are revolutionary treatments for severe 
and chronic malnutrition. 
Known as Ready-to-Use Food (RUF), these nutrition packs 
have been endorsed by the World Health Organization and 
treat chronic and severely malnourished children with up 
to 95% success rates. 
In cases of severe malnutrition, children who do not 
receive proper treatment usually die. In cases of moderate 
or chronic malnutrition, untreated children usually grow 
up physically and mentally stunted, are vulnerable to 
infectious diseases, and are unable to be productive 
members of their communities. 
More importantly, RUF have shifted the treatment of 
hungry children from doctors in hospitals to a community-based 
model focused on mothers in homes. Despite their 
success, however, nutrition packs reach just 3% of the 
hungry children who need them.

Two Degrees is the first food company to adopt the one-for-one business model of social giving: for 
every one bar sold, it donates one medically-formulated nutrition pack or a meal to a child. 
Two Degrees’ food bars are crafted with real food, toasted nuts and seeds, and topped with wholesome 
grains. They are all-natural, gluten-free, vegan, GMO free, low sodium, and under 200 calories, and 
currently come in four flavors: Chocolate Peanut, Cherry Almond, Apple Pecan, and Chocolate Banana.

they need in order to start simpler and more effective ways to gain entry 
into this market and scale their innovations.

challenges that can diminish their enthusiasm and impede market 
entry.

TWO DEGREES (II) Malnutrition: How to Fight it? 8 All around the world there are still 200+ million starving children For the past 80 years, the treatment of malnutrition had been the domain of doctors and nurses. Sick children were admitted for several weeks to hospital tents and health centers that were often crowded and understaffed. This in-patient approach was expensive, labor-intensive, and created a number of practical problems. Most importantly, recovery rates with this approach were just 25-40%. Nutrition Packs can dramatically change this The development of nutrition packs has revolutionized the treatment of malnutrition. As highly fortified, nutrient dense pastes made from grains, nuts, seeds, milk powder, sugar, oil, vitamins, and minerals, nutrition packs are ready to eat straight from the package.
