PEACE CORPS/MOZAMBIQUE
DESCRIPTION OF PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEER SERVICE
NAME : Cristian Ariel Perez PEACE CORPS I.D. No. 100662837 Mozambique
Cristian Ariel Perez was invited to be a member of the 23rd group of Volunteers to serve in Peace
CorpsMozambique. OnSeptember24,20t4,Mr.Perezbeganal0-weektrainingprogramatthe
Peace Corps training center near Maputo, the country's capital. Training included 145 hours of
Portuguese and 2 5 hours of cross-cultural training. Technical training included 1 5 5 hours of lesson
planning techniques and teaching methodologies. On December 3,2074, Mr. Perez was sworn in as
a Peace Corps Volunteer. He was assigned to work as a TEFL teacher in Angoche, an urban district
capital in the northern province of Nampula.
His primary responsibilities and activities included the following:
Teachins TEFL at the Local Secondary School
o Taught the following subjects and numbers of students at the Escola Secunddria de Angoche

Promoted disease awareness by discussing the prevention, cause, transmission and
treatment for common diseases found in Africa, such as: Cholera, Dengue Fever, Ebola,
HIV/AIDS, Malaria Schistosomiasis and Rabies.
Gave students extra credit as an incentive for them to study after school and learn study
habits that they could apply for future use and allowed students to redo failed exams, under
supervision, to inspire kids to continue studying and trying to master chapters that were
more difficult.
Participated in observing colleagues' classes and in return had his classes observed in order
to share ideas and critiques.
Required the male students to always sit after every female student was seated to promote
respect from the male students for the female students. Feeling respected also promoted
more participation and empowerment from the female students,
Secondary responsibilities and activities included:
Volunteer Advisorv Council
r Worked as a representative for the 22 northern volunteers of cohort 23 in meetings held.
o Acted as a liaison for volunteers when there were personal matters and advised volunteers
on which avenues to follow in order to facilitate organized communication.
. Updated volunteers' contact list and helped conduct emergency phone drills and necessary
surveys for Peace Corps.
Centro de Formagflo de Iuventude
o Held open hours 4 days a week at the center, 2.5 hours per day, to tutor chemistry biology,
math and English to students from the surrounding 4 high schools.
r Helped organize informational classes with other volunteers to discuss Malaria, HIV/AIDS,
environmental conservation, puberty and sexual reproduction.
JUNTOS Leadership Group
r Lead a local co-ed IUNTOS youth group in weekly discussions about Malaria and HIV/AIDS
prevention and transmission, physical and mental abuse awareness, gender equality,
puberty and reproduction, and how to be a community leader.
o Designed a brochure with a comic included discussing myths and facts concerning Malaria
and handed out 200+ copies throughout the community with the youth group.
o Discussed Malaria with youth on the local radio, gave informational sessions, and held an
art contest to solidiff an understanding on the topic.
English Theatre Group
o Prepared an original script in Portuguese with a group of youth and then oversaw the
translation process of the script into English, checked for grammatical faults and the correct
expression of social idioms.
o Practiced daily for a month with the group fine tuning pronunciation, acting, vocal
projection, stage management, and costumes.
. Supervised the travel of 9 students to an annual competition and competed amongst I
groups from two different provinces where we placed first.
Private Tutorine
o Tutored a local elderly woman who showed interest in learning English so that she could
communicate and interact with customers who didn't speak the local language. Lessons
took place once a week 3 hours each session, for the whole duration of time at site.
o Established a preparatory group to study for university entry exams. Lessons took place
every day of the weeh 3 hours each session, during the time period of the final 4 weeks at
site. Biology lessons encompassed topics such as: microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, and
plant anatomy and physiology. Chemistry lessons included basic instruction in inorganic,
organic and physical chemistry.
Health and Exercise Group
o Initiated a fitness group which met weekly to exercise 2.5 hours.
o Meetings were also used to discuss nutrition, proper hydration and functions of the body in
order to enhance familiarity with basic health topics [specifically important went
exercising).
Mr. Perez also participated regularly in a variety of community activities, including town festivals
and health trainings. He developed strong friendships with many community members and leaders
and with his teacher colleagues. He continually shared and promoted cross-cultural exchanges and
increased understanding between the U.S. and Mozambique.
Pursuant to Section 5(f) of the Peace Corps Act,22 USC 2504(0, as amended, any former
Volunteer employed by the United States Government following his/her Peace Corps
Volunteer service is entitled to have any period ofsatisfactory Peace Corps service credited
for purposes of retirement, seniority, reduction in force,leave, and other privileges based on
length of Government Service. The service shall not be credited toward the completion of
the probationary or trial period of any service requirement for career appointment.
This is to certify, in accordance with Executive Order No. 11103 of April 10, 1963 that
Cristian Ariel Perez served satisfactorily as a Peace Corps Volunteer. His service ended on
November 10, 2015. He is therefore eligible to be appointed as a career-conditional
employee in the competitive civil service on a noncompetitive basis. This benefit under the
Executive Order extends for a period of one year after completion of Volunteer service,
except that the employing agency may extend the period for up to three years for a former
Volunteer who enters military service, pursues studies at a recognized institution of higher
learning, or engages in other activities which, in the view of the appointing authority,
warrant extension of the period.
