DEFINITION OF MUCOUS COLITIS:
A common gastrointestinal disorder involving an abnormal condition of gut contractions
(motility) and gut sensation (hypersensitivity) characterized by abdominal pain, bloating,
mucous in stools, and irregular bowel habits with diarrhoea or constipation or alternating
diarrhoea and constipation, symptoms that tend to be chronic, wax and wane over the years.4
AETIOLOGY:
No definite cause is known but the attacks are precipitated by overwork, worry, often in cold
weather, prolonged use of purgatives, nervous causes, and dietetic errors.
CLINICAL FEATURES:
īļ Pain - Persistent abdominal pain and discomfort of burning character especially in left
iliac fossa; colic worse after bowel evacuation.
īļ Character of stool â Stool may be hard and ribbon-like, attacks of obstinate constipation
alternating with attacks of diarrhoea. During diarrhoea mucus may be passed in masses,
shreds or casts; stool does not contain blood.
īļ Accompanying symptoms âAbdominal distension, Insomnia, Fatigue and loss of weight.
īļ On Examination â Distended caecum, colon is felt tender. The patient often accurately
delineates the colon along its whole course. Eczema of umbilicus may co-exist.
3. Page 3 of 11
DIAGNOSIS:
The disease is distinguished from Ulcerative colitis clinically by presence of blood or not.
Barium enema and Sigmoidoscopy are necessary to exclude organic condition. Barium meal
may show narrowing of descending and sigmoid colon.4
PROGNOSIS:
It can cause many years of ill health and needs much patience in treatment. Diverticulosis and
diverticulitis may be developed in due course of years. Reassurance is necessary. Treatment
must be directed to the underlying nervous make-up of the individual. Repeated stool
examination must be discouraged.5
DIET AND REGIMEN:
The diet needs to liberal except coarse roughage to be avoided. Fruit and vegetables are
useful for their cellulose content. Smoking and drinking must be avoided. Some patients are
greatly benefitted after quitting smoking.
Adequate warm clothing covering the abdomen is essential as cold may precipitate an attack.

is discharged with violent urging to stool and colicky pains.
