A Research Data Catalogue supporting Blue Growth: the BlueBRIDGE caseBlue BRIDGE
Presentation by Massimiliano Assante, CNR-ISTI, Pisa, Italy
How the FAIR principles should manifest in reality is largely open to interpretation. In this presentation it is described the approach exploited in the context of the BlueBRIDGE EU project. This approach culminates in an open, flexible and rich catalogue where an ample set of research resources are expected to be seamlessly discovered and accessed by overcoming interoperability and reusability issues. Behind the catalogue there is a rich and powerful infrastructure (D4Science.org) that enacts the catalogue FAIRness by deploying and operating a set of service and facilities enabling to actually have access the catalogue items payload (beyond metadata). The presentation describes some of the prototypical patterns implemented to enable the collaborative production and publication of scientific output compliant with the Open Science and FAIR principles. More on BlueBRIDGE here www.bluebridge-vres.eu
OCRE launched its first funding call - specifically focused on stimulating the adoption of digital Earth Observation (EO) services by researchers - on Wednesday 14 October 2020 at 14:00 CEST. Two subsequent calls for projects using earth observation services are planned to open in February and July 2021 respectively.
Under this 1st EO funding call, OCRE aims to fund the consumption of EO services by projects which can become clear showcases for the benefits of using Earth Observation Services; projects which;
Are a part of the European research community.
Use earth observation data from the Copernicus programme in their research.
Support the FAIR data principles and intend to share their research data with peers.
Clearly demonstrate how the use of commercial Earth Observation Services can provide agility in terms of research activities; improve research or enable new research outcomes.
Provide significant relevance within their research discipline.
Are not currently using these tools extensively.
Hope to continue usage of Earth Observation Services in their research.
Can begin to use Earth Observation Services in early 2021.

OCRE: Stimulating the Uptake of Commercial Digital Services in European Research
Presented at the 2nd EOSC-hub Week, Prague, April 11, by Andres Steijaert - GEANT
The Open Clouds for Research Environments (OCRE) project aims to stimulate the usage uptake of commercial digital services by the European research community.
OCRE will make selected commercial digital services an integral part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), ensuring compliance with EOSC requirements and visibility in the EOSC-hub Service Catalogue.
ICOS: Integrated Carbon Observation System Open data to open our eyes to clim...Blue BRIDGE
Presentation by Harry Lankreijer, ICOS-Carbon Portal, Lund University, Sweden.
ICOS is a pan-European research infrastructure (RI) for observing and understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of Europe and its adjacent regions. The major task of ICOS is to collect and make available in a transparent manner, the high-quality observational data from its state-of-the-art measurement stations. These ICOS data – from atmosphere, ecosystem and ocean stations – will contribute to research aiming to describe and understand the present state of the global carbon cycle. The Carbon Portal will be the virtual data center that present the data products and make it available. This presentation will briefly present the work of ICOS and the Carbon Portal towards open data with FAIR principles. ICOS has an open data policy with free use, requesting the user to give appropriate credit (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 ). The Carbon Portal is developing a data catalogue using an ontology based on a semantic metadata description. This will make it possible to integrate ICOS observations with data from other RI’s as well with data of global networks. For integration, the Carbon Portal is actively following the developments of international standards for eg. metadata and data citation.

As part of the final BETTER Hackathon, project partners prepared 4 hackathon exercises. SatCen organised this exercise as the challenge promoter for the Geospatial Intelligence thematic area. This step-by-step exercise featured the use of Binder and purposely provided cloud resources but could also be run locally through a Docker image and Docker Compose. Participants were expected to be familiar with the Jupyter environment (Python 3) and the most common EO libraries (e.g. GDAL / Rasterio, pandas + numpy, scipy). The recorded part includes the introduction of the exercise in the context of the BETTER project.

Science Demonstrator Session: Physics and AstrophysicsEOSCpilot .eu
The main focus of Science Demonstrator sessions is to provide feedback to the EOSC community on the first experience of science demonstrators in the practical use of the emerging EOSC ecosystem.
Each panel will consist of a representative of a Science Demonstrator that will provide an overview of their experiences in the use of emerging EOSC services.
These sessions will help members of the scientific communities understanding the current state of maturity of the EOSC ecosystem and what is obtainable in a field of scientific research. It is also valuable to prospective Service Providers who wish to discover what are the challenges and opportunities that user communities might have to deal with, as a result of the adoption of their services.
This session will focus on Physics and Astrophysics.
OCRE is taking part in the EGU General Assembly 2020 that has been in session since the 5th of May and due to close on the 8th.
The General Assembly is the largest geoscience event usually held each spring in Vienna however due to the COVID-19, this year's event is held online.
On the 20th of January 2016, Bob Jones, CERN and PICSE & HNSciCloud Coordinator, presented HNSciCloud, the recently launched (Jan 2016) European Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) project co-funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme.
This year the "hot topic" of the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC) Annual General Meeting was the creation of a Marketplace Alliance for Earth Observation Services (MAEOS). Recently, the EARSC has released a position paper around the development of a European Marketplace for EO services as a leverage for the exploitation of Copernicus data and services alongside commercial offerings. In this presentation all the insights and lessons learnt on marketplaces for cloud services.
