5.  How to enroll in WIC: based on income, family size, child age, and
nutritional risk, a person can enroll for WIC. Also, one is eligible for
food stamps, he or she qualifies.
 Resources available: nutritionists, lactation consultants, food
packages according to child age.
 Classes available:
 Process for continuing: Continue to meet the income guidelines and
woman or child must have a nutritional risk. The adult can be on
WIC until the child is 5

8.  The Springfield Health Department offers Prenatal Case Management
 No reference needed for the available resources, self-reference is
permissible, and physician referral is common.
 Only class discussed was the “Baby ABC’s” which is a Free class
where parents can learn basic infant-care skills in a no-stress group
setting.
 Prenatal Case Management includes: Prenatal care, delivery, nutrition,
healthy lifestyles, breastfeeding, and parenting.

16.  Free pregnancy tests are available at the Jordan Valley Women’s
Health Clinic and if tested positive, and if desired, an
appointment is scheduled with a doctor
 Establishing care also takes place after a positive pregnancy
test, along with doctor appointments, class offerings and other
amenities.

Jordan Valley Women’s Health Clinic
 Costs vary depending on the patient’s insurance, Medicaid, and
individual situation factors.
 Dating ultrasounds are optional
 Ultrasound will be administered at 20 weeks for every patient
to determine fetal anatomy progression.
 Costs for ultrasound vary from patient to patient due to
insurance/ financial needs

19. Problems and Challenges

20.  We could not find the bus to leave from Cox College at first.
 Our tickets were not accepted by the bus and were always
‘declined’. However, the bus drivers understood and let us
pregnant gals on anyways.
 Missed bus at one of the bus stops. Luckily, there was another bus
coming to a nearby stop only 20 minutes later.
 After the Turner Center, we had 10 minutes to walk to our bus
stop that was easily 15 minutes away. However, with a winded
and with a speedy walk we made it there in time.
Bus Calamities

21.  Each resource was easily accessible by bus, walking only minor
distances.
 Many people were helpful when we were uncertain, including
the facility workers
 Everyone at each facility was very knowledgeable
 Each facility had a bounty of resources to offer an expectant
mother or a new mother.
 The Turner Center was the most organized and offered the widest
variety of classes, however, it was the most expensive.
 WIC was the best option for mothers with low income, as they
provided food for both mother and baby. They also provided
lactation and nutrition consultants for free.
