Nurdor Parent houses project
1.
2. In Serbia, each day one child is diagnosed with cancer. Each week one
child dies.
According to official statistics Serbia faces a 2% increase rate of
pediatric oncology patients per year.
Among all diseases with children and adolescents, cancer is the no. 1
cause of death.
However, what encourages is that childhood cancer is successfully
treated in over 70% of cases, if diagnosed on time and properly treated.
Most common type is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), where the
treatment success rate is even higher – around 90%.
NURDOR’s mission is to make possible that each sick child in Serbia has
the best possible conditions for medical treatment as well as all the
support that their condition requires.
3. Why we need Parent Houses?
One of basic strategies in pediatric oncology treatment is that a
child spends the less time in hospital as possible. This is why,
most of these kids, when their condition allows it, receives the
therapy in the (outpatient) Day Hospital.
Lead by the experience of parents coming from small cities in
Serbia to the cities which have pediatric oncology hospitals and
by European and worldwide strategies in pediatric oncology
NURDOR started the “Parent Houses” project in 2010.
4. During the outpatient treatment, the little patients are not provided
with the stationary accommodation within hospitals. During this
period families from all over Serbia are forced to find and pay the
accommodation by themselves.
Having in mind that in 80% of cases these are families in poor
economic and social condition, this represents a huge problem for
them, which even takes into question the possibility of treatment.
Families usually try to find some places to stay (with relatives or
cheap and inadequate hostels). This situation brings child’s life to a
serious risk, given that her/his physical state is a serious immune
depression.
5. When the mediacl treatment protocol allows it – children and
their families are accommodated in one of NURDOR Parent
houses.
Free accommodation is the first, but not the only thing that they
find in our house. Each day NURDOR provides them with
psychological counseling, social care and support, as well as
friendly and family environment which is enriched every day.
NURDOR operates five parent houses – three in Belgrade and
one in each Novi Sad and Nis.

11. In addition to free accommodation, on a daily basis NURDOR
organizes support workshops for parents and creative-fun activities
for kids and youngsters (visits of psychologists, social worker,
medical staff, specially trained volunteers).
This type of accommodation represents a psycho-social support,
which forms an important piece in the treatment procedure.
12. All activities are planed with an active participation of our “small
and big” guests and based on their needs for:
• additional services of social protection (accommodation, help
in practicing their social rights)
• additional psychological support (work within group and
individually)
• need for additional information related to child’s disease and
therapy (workshops with our experts associates and “helper
parents” from NURDOR, whose kids successfully finished their
treatments.
13. In one year, NURDOR accommodates between 80 and 100 families in which a
child is treated of cancer, from all over Serbia.
Dependent on treatment protocol and therapy schedule, families stay in a
parent house from couple of days up to several months. It happened more
than once that families needed to stay even more than one year. Taking care
of families in the parent houses, frees capacities inside the hospitals, which
are insufficient to accommodate all children.
14. All parent houses abound with joyful and warm atmosphere.
These are, like any other HOME, places where birthdays, New
Years Eve and other holidays are celebrated with plenty of fun
and happiness. The staff of NURDOR and our volunteers are
always invited and welcomed to our superheroes’ parties.
15. The accommodation in parent
houses is organized in
cooperation with medical staff
from oncology departments.
NURDOR employs a
psychologist and social
worker who take care of
families on a daily basis with
a constant support of more
than 70 volunteers, who are
specially trained to work with
vulnerable groups.
16. By offering this completely free accommodation and support
activities in the parent houses, NURDOR is helping not only families
and kids with cancer, but also this project has a wider impact given
that it provides more capacity in hospitals in Belgrade, Novi Sad
and Nis for the kids in bad medical condition.
Also, we see a special contribution of this project when assessing
its impact in improving the practice of philanthropy and
volunteering capacities of a wider social community.
17. The goals of project “NURDOR Parent Houses”:
• Free accommodation for 25 families and kids, with providing the
must have conditions for their daily life;
• Provision of food, cleaning chemicals, house-keeping and body
care products;
• Informing and educating parents through support workshops lead
by doctors, medical staff, psychologist, social worker, nutritionist
and parents from NURDOR, accompanied by volunteers who
spend time with kids;
• Rising the spirit of philanthropy and volunteerism.
22. Monthly costs of accommodating one child and parents are set around RSD
20,000 (EUR 170).
Parent houses operate 365 days/year. This means that an yearly cost of
Parent House Project is around EUR 51,000. Hopefully, we will be able to
open one more house, given that our current capacities are not enough.
NURDOR enables you to become friend of our little super heroes.
The beginning of chemo therapy doesn’t need to be the end of their
childhood, joy and dreams. Lets make this possible!
Thank you!
