As a learning space and technology consultant, I have worked on a number of large scales, highly sophisticated academic building
projects requiring detailed planning models and multi-discipline coordination as well as the management of client stakeholder’s
expectations. To illustrate the range and depth of my experience, here are summaries of four challenging and complex projects with
which I have been involved.
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI
North Quad Residential and Academic Complex
The University of Michigan was one of the first of the
large universities to envision and build a new type of
academic environment where living, learning, academic
support and social activities could exist in a single building.
The full block site accommodates 360,000 sf of offices and
meeting rooms for various academic departments,
classrooms, laboratories, TV Studios, as well as residential
suites for students, dining, and social spaces.
In order to future proof the facility, I focused
considerable attention on making sure that a
comprehensive and robust basebuilding
infrastructure was integrated as part of the
bricks and mortar of the building. This strategy
allows for the iterative integration of technology
over time.
One of the most popular spaces is the Media
Gateway, located on two floors of a portion of
the building. This technology rich area provides
the perfect social gathering environment for
student collaboration in open and semi-private
gathering “huddle areas”. Extensive integration
of digital signage, computer connectivity and
wall mounted flat screen displays allow for
viewing and sharing of rich media, as well as for
interactive video teleconferencing.
There are three independent TV Studio Complexes. Two
are dedicated to the Department of Screen Arts and Culture
to support their film and video production programs
respectively. The third is targeted for general availability and
use by any member of the student community.
The Language Resource Center provides well equipped
audio and video based learning facilities to support the over
40 languages offered at the University
The Department of Communication Studies has
specialized spaces to support, among other things, focus
group observation and audio/video recording.
The School of Information has custom designed
computer technology enhanced classrooms designed with
adjacent support space to house servers and infrastructure to
support each classroom.
Residence living for 450 undergrads, a dining hall, and a
café are incorporated within the North Quad facility. Taken
together, the unique combination of elements make living
and learning here an exceptionally rich and rewarding
experience.
