The North Borneo Railway operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays between Kota Kinabalu and Papar in Malaysia. It features the Vulcan, one of the few remaining functional wood-fired steam locomotives in the world. The scenic route passes through rainforests and views of paddy fields, sago plantations, and the South China Sea. Passengers can experience a colonial-style ride in five refurbished carriages and have lunch in traditional tiffin boxes.
