Introduction-
 The case of 23- year old girl-known as
“Nirbhaya.
 Incident happens on 16 December 2012.
 She died after 13 days of this Incident on
29 December 2012.
 “Hang the rapist” was the vociferous cry
of the Indian media.
 The Protest started in Delhi and other
parts of country.

Background of Movement
 Provoked unprecedented protests in India
 Harassment and violence against women and girls in India came into
international spotlight
 Protest against the prevalence of violent acts perpetrated against
women
 Seven metro rail stations in New Delhi were closed on 22 December
to discourage protesters from gathering at Raisina Hill
 The attack sparked wide spread protest and a campaign by civil
society group
 The protest against rape has become a mass movement

Legal Impact
 On March 21, 2013, the rape law in the
country was amended. The new tougher
anti-rape law – criminal Law (
Amendment) Act, 2013- to punish sex
crimes redefined rape and made
punishments more stringent including
death for repeat rape offenders.
 Juvenile Justice ( Care & protection of
children ) Act , 2015.
