NIPPLE DISCHARGE
CLASSIFICATION:
i) Physiological: After child birth
ii)Pathological: a)Benign(88%): Duct ectasia, Duct papilloma
Fibrocystic disease of breast
Idiopathic
Prolactinemia
Infection
Drugs, i.e. OCP,TCA, Dopamine agonists
b)Malignant(12%): Carcinoma of breast
TYPE OF DISCHARGE:
Milky: Physiological
Blood: Carcinoma
Bloody discharge: Duct papilloma
Cryme: Duct ectasia
Sticky (green/brown/gray): Duct ectasia. Common in 5th
decade, with tenderness and pain.
Serous: Fibrocystic disease, ectasia.
Serosanguinous: carcinoma,infection.
Greenish: Fibrocysradenosis
Black: Duct papilloma/carcinoma
INVESTIGATION:
Discharge study: Microscopic, C/S
Mammography,
US of breast and axilla,
FNAC/core biopsy.
Ductography
TREATMENT:
Treat the causes of nipple discharge
