1. There are many things I could relate to in this book that Elie had to go
through. But the one that I can relate to the most is when he was rescued, and
the first thing he wanted to do was eat, and he literally ate till he was
hospitalized with food poisoning. During swim season, your day starts around
3:30 in the morning, and ends around 10 to 11 in the evening. You are working
out for an hour to an hour and a half in a pool only an hour after you woke up.
Then you have to go to school for 7 hours, which feels a lot longer than usual.
Then after school, you have homework to do, which may take a while. And for
some reason, I had a tendency of eating a small pb& j for breakfast, skip lunch,
and sometimes skip dinner. So during the season, the only things that are on
my mind are swimming, eating, and sleeping. Elie definitely must have felt this
way for the fact that he had been in a concentration camp for months, working,
being tortured, and only having soup and bread for a meal. Like me, he must
have had a feast when he got the chance. And like him, sometimes I eat too
much and get sick, just like how he got food poisoning. I remember getting food
poisoning when we were at Joe’s Crab Shack, and I was really hungry and I got
this really big burger with fries. It turns out the burger wasn’t cooked all the
way, and I got really sick. But back to my point, when you have to do heavy
burden work, and you haven’t eaten a good meal in a while, it doesn’t matter
who you are, you are going to want to eat. So this is how I can really relate to
Elie in this book, because when you work a lot but don’t eat a lot, you are
going to get hungry, and you are going to want to eat.
