Place The Land
Nigeria has a long coastline on the Gulf of Guinea. This gulf is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the coast, the land is laced with many rivers and creeks and covered with mangrove swamps. A mangrove is a tropical tree with roots extending above and beneath the water.
Traveling north, the land becomes a vast tropical rain forest. The forest gradually thins into woodlands and savannas in central Nigeria. Savannas are tropical grasslands with scattered trees. Highlands and plateaus also blanket this area. Farther north, a stretch of partly dry grasslands lies on the edge of the vast Sahara.
The Climate Nigeria has several climate regions. Most of the country is tropical with high average temperatures. The south receives plenty of rainfall year-round. Steppe regions to the north have a distinct dry season. In the winter months, a dry, dusty wind called the harmattan blows south from the Sahara Desert.
