In August of 2014 I visited Portland, ME to see the Circus Conservatory of America and to present a proposal about the Library of the Circus Conservatory of America to a group of librarians. Those in attendance included librarians from University of Southern Maine, Maine College of Art, Portland Public Library, University of New England, Bates College, and Colby. The presentation consisted of a brief overview of circus arts, what types of materials the Library of the Circus Conservatory of America would collect, and a discussion about how the Circus Conservatory of America and the libraries at the presentation could collaborate to create a regional performing arts collection.

The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) began with a private collection that was donated to the Smithsonian. The museum now has three locations, including the flagship location on the National Mall in Washington D.C. that opened in 2004. The NMAI is unique in that it prioritizes Native voices and perspectives, and works closely with Native communities. It has been successful in achieving its mission of preserving and fostering understanding of Native culture, while also empowering Indigenous peoples.
Conservation Treatment Grant presentation
The NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program is a partnership of the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and GHHN that provides support for treatment procedures to aid in stabilizing and preserving objects held in collections of museums, historical, and cultural organizations in New York State. Philadelphia Museum of Art Library Committee
The document summarizes a project to catalog and make available 115 hidden archival collections from 23 area archives and libraries in the Philadelphia region. It received $500,000 from the Mellon Foundation. As part of the project, staff at the Philadelphia Museum of Art processed and created finding aids for several collections, including records from Evan Turner and the Department of Community and Urban Outreach, Marketing and Public Relations Department records, the Stella Kramrisch papers, the FOCUS archives about women in visual arts, and the Julien Levy papers.

“You Just Can’t Live Without It”
This document summarizes an ethnographic study and evaluation of traditional cultural properties associated with the modern Gladesmen culture in southern Florida. The study was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to identify any historic properties eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Researchers interviewed 34 self-identified Gladesmen and evaluated 13 properties associated with the Gladesmen culture. These included commercial properties like fish camps, non-commercial sites like clubs and camps, and natural areas. Of the 13 properties, the researchers recommend that Mack's Fish Camp and the Airboat Association of Florida are eligible for listing as traditional cultural properties. The report provides background on the Gladesmen culture and environment, discusses cultural perspectives from interviews,

The archives of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection shed new light on New York City during World War II. To protect the city's water supply from sabotage or attack, emergency measures were taken, including expanding the patrol areas and staff of the Board of Water Supply Police. Photos in the DEP archives show the BWS Police participating in a war bond parade in 1942. The collection illustrates how a local agency contributed to the war effort and guarded against threats to critical infrastructure during the war.
A manual for a small archives
This document is an introduction to a manual for small archives published in 1988. It provides context for the creation of the manual, which aimed to help archivists in small repositories who had limited training and resources. It describes how a committee formed by the Archives Association of British Columbia developed the manual over four years with funding from various sources. The manual was tested by archivists in small archives in British Columbia, Alberta and Nova Scotia before publication to improve the text. The introduction also briefly defines what an archive is and the role of an archivist.

This document discusses using primary sources in social studies classrooms and provides examples of a case study and student project on westward expansion in the United States. It encourages analyzing historical events from multiple perspectives by using primary sources to develop a richer understanding. Examples of primary sources on westward expansion are presented, along with questions historians ask to critically analyze primary sources by considering their context, purpose, and potential biases. The document concludes by discussing multigenre writing projects that have students creatively synthesize and present what they have learned from multiple historical sources.

The GRAMMY Foundation awarded $300,000 in grants to 20 recipients to support music research and sound preservation projects. The grants will fund projects such as studying the perceptual deficits of cochlear implant users, investigating rhythm perception in toddlers with autism, and preserving rare recordings in archives. The Foundation has awarded nearly $7 million to support archiving, preservation and research over the past 30 years.

Dr. Katherine Skinner is the Executive Director of the Educopia Institute, a not-for-profit educational organization that builds networks and collaborative communities to help cultural, scientific, and scholarly institutions achieve greater impact.
Multiple efforts are bringing academic museum and gallery leaders together with their peers across archives and libraries, to capture and build upon effective (best) practices across the fields. This session shares information about three such efforts, setting the stage for a discussion on how participation in such cross-sector collaborations can benefit museum and gallery leaders. Participants will leave this session with information on how best to participate in broad collaborations across museums, archives, and libraries to contribute, to compile best practices and common frameworks in support of their own institutional efforts.
