A statistics tutor at Florida Atlantic University describes helping a student succeed in her class. The student had broken his writing hand, did not speak English fluently, and was sure he would fail. Through constant tutoring and supplemental instruction sessions, his grade improved from failing to a B+. The positive impact of tutoring and encouragement was shown when the student emailed to thank the tutor for his success. Receiving thanks from students who achieve success through tutoring services is an honor.

Sessions is such a pleasure,
especially when one gets such
posi ve feedback from the
students themselves. There was
one par cular student who had
broken his right hand (the hand
he wrote with). He was also not fluent in English and he
was sure that he would not pass Sta s cs. He had a very
tough me in class, but with constant tutoring and
a ending my SI Sessions, he raised his grade from
failing to passing the class with a B+. Tutoring and SI
Sessions are not about just going over concepts and
problems that may be difficult. They also provide
posi vity, encouragement, and study skills. During
winter break this successful student emailed me to
thank me and tell me about his success. He was very
apprecia ve and informed me, “I couldn’t have done it
without you.” Before his comment, I didn’t realize how
big an impact I made on students’ lives. To feel that I get
to contribute to a student’s success is such an honor.
Someone who barely spoke English and had to learn to
write with his le hand had such a wonderful success
story. I know for a fact there are many other students,
including me, who appreciate the Center for Teaching
and Learning.
