This document provides updates on various activities from CEHURD, including hosting a conference on economic, social, and cultural rights which discussed issues in the health sector. It also announces an upcoming social media campaign called "Burst the Myth" aimed at ending preventable maternal mortality. Additionally, it discusses sensitization workshops held at several universities to educate students on health issues through university health clubs.

Welcome to the 2nd edition of our
weekly Newsletter. The issue break took
off a week to prepare this edition a new
phase in reporting. Apologies to those
who waited eagerly for an issue last
week, the intention not to have it
published was in order to have time to
prepare for a new edition which is also
the second edition.
Highlights for last week include; The
conference on Economic Social&Cultural
Rights, plus Health Clubs activities.

CEHURD is part of the organising committee for the
annual national conference on Economic Social and
Cultural Rights, which Makerere University has hosted for
the two years since initiation. During this year's
conference that took place between 16th-17th September
2015, CEHURD convened a panel to discuss the current
trends and issues affecting the health sector. The two days'

conference left many feeling it should have had more days, because of how critical
issues raised where, plus how vigilant the audience seemed towards the concerns raised
during the conference. officiated by Hon. Justice Johann van der Westhuizen of the
south African constitutional court, the Conference attracted politicians, students, policy
implementers and makers, academics, civil society among others. Funded by
USAID,PATH,UNHR,DGF,OSIEA,KIOS and organised by; CEHURD, PILAC, ISER,
MUK,UHRC,HURINET: this conference was an opportunity for all the different
segments in society that is; health, education, politics, justice, economy to have a
workable sustainable development drive. What came out clearly, was the fact that
corruption was blocking this hence the need to deal with it at all levels.
'BURST THE MYTH' CAMPAIGN- LOOKING AT 28TH SEPTEMBER 2015
After several attempts to a campaign that will leverage maternal mortality particularly, break through on fighting unsafe abortion,
CEHURD in collaboration with The Coalition to Stop Maternal Mortality to Unsafe Abortions(CSMMUA) is working on a social
media campaign in line with the global day on safe abortion which is 28th September this year. The campaign dubbed 'burst the
myth' is designed to contribute to the voices of citizens in the fight to end preventable maternal mortality crisis, as well as serve as
the trending harsh tag for messages on the myths and facts about abortion. With a concept of a video with voices of women who
have had unsafe abortions, highlighting their plight. The trending harsh tag will be 'Burst the Myth' the campaign will be launched on
30th September at Imperial Royale hotel, Purpose to be part of this! Remember harsh tag is #burst the myth#

UNIVESRITY STUDENTS SENSITISED ON HEALTH RELATED ISSUES - KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY GRABS THE GOLDEN CHANCE!
United Nations Development Program(UNDP) saw the need to have university
students sensitised and kept abreast on key issues regarding their health, hence
sensitising universities through health clubs by CEHURD. The activities that gave
students a chance to know and deal with; Non-Communicable Diseases, HIV,Sexual
and Reproductive health among others, had some of the renown Infectious Disease
specialist Dr.Waita share experience regarding HIV as testimonies from people
living with HIV on prevention and care were shared. These activities ran for 3days in
each of the three Universities(Nkumba, Mukono and Makerere) while Kyambogo set
to have theirs later in the month after replacing Kampala International University.
Nkumba University that followed after Makerere University hosted over
90 students, while Mukono University equally sensitised a great number
of students, but key in these activities was the fact that the university
health clubs needed to sustain health club activities and self sustainability
was highly recommended. During Mr. Don's presentation at Nkumba
University, it came out so clearly to the students, as he gave them skills on
resource mobilisation strategies and self sustaining kills for their health
clubs. It should be noted that these health clubs have before held activities
such as; marathons, debates that engage students and the sensitisation
workshops came in handy for their clubs' visibility in the universities as
well as bond to what the health clubs where established to promote.
