This document discusses the positive impact of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program on Andrew, an 8-year-old boy, and his single mother Lisa. Carlos has been Andrew's Big Brother for over a year, providing emotional support and being a role model. Their outings and "heart-to-heart talks" have helped Andrew with issues stemming from his absent father. Lisa says Carlos really cares about her son and has been "a gold mine." The document encourages volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters to make a lifelong difference in a child's life.

Sunday Friends, Replacing Charity with Opportunityhalehmahbod
I have observed how Sunday Friends is positively influencing the lives of less fortunate families and how it helps the families to move from the state of being needy and feeling helpless to the state of taking control of their lives, helping others and becoming valuable members of the community.
As an avid photographer I wanted to share this story with you. These photos are candid shots of the participants and are taken during the Sunday Friends programs.

Our Story
iFamile Emu Children’s Center was founded June 2014 by Akol Benyamen Jayjay with the help of 친구등록 and Anyango Maureen. The idea for the organization was born when Akol and 친구등록 visited the rural orphan children in Bukedea-Uganda. During this visit Akol saw many children under child labour with little to no access to basic necessities. Since then Anyango has remained actively involved as a Co-founder whilst Akol remains the heart and soul of iFamile Emu. It was at this time that he was so much moved with compassion and decided to start the iFamile Emu Children’s Center.
iFamile Emu means “One Family” in Luganda (It’s the most language used in the central Uganda). We have made all the necessary efforts to bring up the children as members of one family despite coming from different backgrounds. This makes our center stand out from the others because we care deeply not only for feeding, sheltering, clothing and educating them but we also care about the family values we are instilling in them at this early stage of their development. iFamile Emu strongly believes that working together as a family we can make a difference to the future of the children in our care today.

1. Big News
Volume 1 • Issue 2
“Why couldn’t the baker go to the game?” 8-year-old
Andrew asks as he leaves a voicemail for his Big Brother.
“You’ll have to call me back for the answer.”
“Because he didn’t have enough dough!”
he exclaims when Carlos calls him back.
Lisa says, “When I became a young, single parent,
I knew Big Brothers Big Sisters would be a good
way to find a positive role model for my son.”
Carlos has not only been a positive sounding
board for Andrew, but also an essential resource
for Lisa. Andrew has emotional issues stemming
from the absence of his absent biological father.
“They have fun together, but they also have heart-
to-heart talks—so Carlos has important insight.”
Carlos talks regularly with Lisa on the phone and often
accompanies her when she visits Andrew’s counselor.
“It shows that he really cares about my son,” she says.
The pair always has fun on their outings—sporting
events, visits to the park, going out for pizza,
watching movies. “We have found a gold mine in
Carlos. He has really taken Andrew under his wing.”
When Andrew and Lisa first signed up with Big Brothers
Big Sisters, Andrew waited more than a year to be paired
with Carlos. “It was very discouraging for him,” Lisa
explains. “My daughter only had to wait about three months.
I encourage more men to volunteer, the life of a young
boy will never be the same. It’s sad when a relative doesn’t
understand the difference they can make, but it’s great
that someone with no connection to the child can make
this kind of commitment. That, to me, is priceless...
Be a Volunteer
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of
the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not
to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You
have the opportunity to help shape a child’s
future for the better by empowering them
to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually
a lot of fun. You and your Little can share
the kinds of activities you already like to do.
Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read
books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies.
Or just give some advice and inspiration.
Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll
enjoy them even more with your Little—
and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.
