This document provides an annual report for Big Brothers Big Sisters. It summarizes the organization's mission, vision, achievements in 2015-2016, financial information, and impact of its mentoring programs. Some key details include: the agency served 688 children in the past year and received its 5th consecutive quality award from BBBS of America; it is seeing increased need for mentors due to issues like gun violence and adversity in the community; and mentoring is shown to help children build resilience and improve outcomes in areas like educational success and healthy behaviors according to surveys of youth in the program. The report requests continued community support through donations, volunteering as mentors, and spreading awareness of the agency's work.

Mission
Provide children facing adversity
with strong and enduring,
professionally supported 1:1
relationships that change their
lives for the better, forever.
Vision
All children achieve
success in life & aspire
to their full potential.
In 2015, the agency celebrated 40 years of
mentoring. We kicked off a new strategic plan
to help us develop stronger outcomes for
youth through 2017.
Mentoring is even more important this year as our community
experienced an increase in gun violence that impacted the lives of
youth. Guns and disputes have become more prevalent, increasing the
need for each child to have more trusted adults in their lives. A mentor
can model positive relationships, encourage accountability, discuss
ways to stay safe and be a listening ear to support for those children
in our community who may be at risk.
Mentoring is growing in importance as a way for children to build
resiliency in the face of trauma. Last summer, our staff received
training on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs research
shows the impact of childhood trauma and the affect it has on
brain development. The most common ACEs are economic hardship
and parental divorce or separation. We discovered that many youth
enrolling in our program have moderate or high risks from ACEs (see
page 4). Mentoring is a key strategy to build resilience.
Please renew your commitment to creating life-changing friendships
and help meet the significant needs of our children. Your support
through donations, mentoring and sharing our story is needed. Thank
you!
Warm wishes,

We have had a great experience being matched

“Nicky is so nice and listens to me when I need her the

3. Information about ACEs
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are
potentially traumatic events that can have
negative, lasting effects on health and
well-being. The more adverse experiences
in childhood, the greater the likelihood
of developmental delays and later health
problems, including heart disease, diabetes,
substance abuse and depression.
Resiliency is key!
Building resiliency in children is the best way to address ACEs. The
agency intends to educate parents and mentors about ACEs. We’ll help
youth develop coping strategies, positive self-esteem and other factors
shown to reduce trauma’s damage. Children who develop supportive,
responsive relationships with caring adults can more easily overcome
the effects of constant stress and adversity.

When Little Brother Jimmy was 3 yrs. old,
his father passed away. For years, it was
just his mom raising him, and his sisters.
When he was 8 yrs old, his mom decided
to sign him up for Big Brothers Big
Sisters so Jimmy could have a male role
model. Jimmy was excited as he really
wanted a male figure he could look up to,
have fun with and teach him cool stuff!
Jimmy received a couples match and met
Big Brother Jim and Big Sister Cathy. He then
met his Big Brother, Jim & Big Sister, Cathy.
He felt a good connection since they were
matched based on similar interests The three of them grew close through activities like sharing meals,
boating and playing the Wii. They even built not one, but two mailboxes together!
Jimmy’s mom re-married and a few years later Jimmy’s step-dad suffered a minor stroke. Jimmy said Jim &
Cathy were by his side regularly to support him:
“My mom had to be at the hospital for many weeks so Jim & Cathy would take me to dinner and then to
the hospital to visit my family; all because they cared so much about me.”
“A Big is not just some grown up that parents
find to do stuff with their kid because they
don’t want to, instead it’s a way to fill a hole in
a child’s life. For me, it was my father who could
not be there for me, even if he’d wanted to be.”

What is our agency seeing?
With 103 youth who have
enrolled since last fall,
we are seeing
statistics similar to
those reported
nationally.
Jim, Jimmy & Cathy recently celebrated
7 years of being matched together!
“Sharing my life with
Jim & Cathy is great!

because of them. They

What is our agency doing with ACEs?
Big Brothers Big Sisters is learning more about
ACEs in order to better address the needs
of children we serve. Starting last fall, each
child enrolled in the program is given an ACE
score based on information collected during
enrollment. The score corresponds to a risk
level: low, moderate, high. A moderate or high
ACEs score places the child at a higher risk
for health and social problems. With the ACEs
score, Enrollment and Matching Specialists
can develop goals tailored to best support the
match.

Did you know...we had
25,500 hrs of service from
volunteers in 2015 Hi, I’m Mary VanHorn and I was matched for 11 years with my Big Sister, Ann Oleson. Growing up was
tougher for me than most kids. My family had little income and no form of transportation, which left
me walking everywhere.
In 2001, when I was in 3rd grade, I was blessed
to be matched with Ann. In the beginning, I
was shy and didn’t know what to think. Ann
was nice and very talkative, but as time went
on I was able to talk to her about almost
anything. Ann
taught me many
things, including
the notion that
I’m better than
C’s and D’s; if
I worked and tried hard enough, I
would succeed. She encouraged me to enjoy life
now while I’m young!
In 2011, I graduated from Jefferson High School with
3 awards: Math Scholar, Science Scholar and 360
Credits (which is above and beyond the credits
needed to graduate). This year, I graduated from
The University of Northern Iowa with a degree in
Athletic Training. I am the first one in my entire
family to ever attend a university!
Because of Ann’s presence in my life, she helped
me get to where I am today. She has always been
there, pushing me to do my best and to never
give up. She had to nag me at times to get better
grades and get things in on time (like college and
scholarship applications). Whenever I need her she
is always just a phone call away.”

Former Bigs, Littles, Parents and Board Members

Alumni Erin Discoll:
In 2005, I was a sophomore in college and looking to give back to the community. I found Big Brothers
Big Sisters and was fortunate to be matched with an amazing Little Sister, Latasha. Not only was she
only 5 years younger than me, but we happened to live in the same neighborhood! We spent the next
eleven months getting to know one another, bonding, and building a friendship that, unbeknownst to
me at the time, would outlast distance, years, and milestones.
Less than a year into the match, I transferred
schools and moved an hour north. Our match
came to an end, but our friendship did not.
We continued to keep in touch, sporadic at
times, through the years via email and social
media.
Fast forward eleven years, to 2016. My “Little”
sister had grown into this beautiful woman
and was preparing to marry the love of
her life. Not only did I have the privilege of
sharing Latasha’s special day with her, but
I was honored to officiate her wedding! At
the ceremony, Latasha’s father personally
thanked me for being there for Latasha
during and after the program, and asked that
I be included in the family photos. What he
may not realize is that Latasha had just as
big of an impact on my life as I had on hers.
So, thank you, Big Brothers Big Sisters. Our
story is proof that the relationships created
through your organization can last years
beyond your program. Proof that even a few
hours a month spent together can leave
memories that last a lifetime. Proof that
what you do for the community truly works.
“What he may not realize is that Latasha had just as big
of an impact on my life as I had on hers.”
