1. MECHANISM1 MECHANISM2 SteeringsystemmakeupBy operatingthe steeringwheel,the wheel
directionischangedmakingthe vehiclechange direction.Inotherwords,the steeringsystemisa
steeringdevice.The fundamental mechanismallowsthe vehicle'sdirectiontobe changedwhen
movementistransferred throughthe steeringwheel gearbox fromthe handle tothe wheels.There are
manytypesof steeringgearmechanismsavailable forsteeringsystems.However,presentlythe main
type isa combinationof arack and piniongear.The rack gear connectedatboth endsbya tie rod is also
knownas the rack and pinmethod.However,becausealarge amountof powerisrequiredtochange
wheel direction,mostvehiclesnowemploypowersteeringmechanisms,whichassistthrough
hydraulics,andmotorizedmechanisms.WheelalignmentThe wheelsare fittedonaslightangle (not
horizontal orsquare) toassiststeeringanddrivability,andtokeepthe vehicletravelinginastraightline.
Thisadjustmentiscalled"wheel alignment"andismade upof 4 elements - caster,camber,toe,king-pin
angle.Castorangle The frontwheelsare fittedoff the axle onanangle,justascastors are fittedonthe
legsof chairs.These are knownascastors, bybeingseton an angle,helpkeepthe vehicleinaconstant
alignedstate.The angle seenfromthe frontthatismade from the perpendicularline opposedtothe
ground,and the wheel incline,isknownasthe camberangle.A negative camberiswhere the bottomis
open,anda positive camberiswhere the topisopen.Thisaffectsthe vehicle'soperation,stabilityand
corneringwhenturning.Lookingatthe wheel angle fromabove,toe-inisknownaswhenthe vehicle's
trackingmovesinwards,andtoe-outisknownaswhenthe trackingmovesoutwards.Whenthe camber
isset to positive,the tendencyforthe wheelstoheadoutwardswillbe eliminatedandthe vehicle's
forwardtrackingwill improve.Whenlookingatthe vehicle fromthe front,the king-pinaxle faces
towardsthe inside of the chassisleaningupwards.The angle thatisperpendicular makesaline fromthe
slantand the surface isknownas the "king-pinangle".The angle thatitissetto keepsthe steering
wheel inastraightpositionandalsomakesthe steeringreturntothe straightpositionafterithasbeen
