The island of New Guinea is politically divided between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Indonesia controls the western half across 141°E longitude, consisting of the provinces of West Papua and Papua. The eastern half forms the independent country of Papua New Guinea, which was formerly a territory of Australia and consists of four regions: Papua, Highlands, Momase, and Islands.
