WRINKLED BRAIN
Why does our brain have wrinkles?
a. Wrinkles are called “folds”
b. Ridges are called “gyri” and
crevices or cracks are called
“sulci”
c. As brain grows, it is confined in
the skull, so it folds over itself

HEADACHES! FRUSTRATING! WHY?
Why do we get headaches?
a. Brain cannot feel pain itself – it is sensing pain in other part of body
b. Mostly happen in nerves, blood vessels and muscles that cover head
and neck
• Muscles or blood vessels swell or tighten, putting pressure on
nerves = headaches

FROZEN, not the movie, but my BRAIN! Not
really….
What causes a brain freeze?
a. When something cold touches the roof of your mouth, the sudden
change in temperature causes the nerves to swell up the blood
vessels – it tries to send the blood back to warm up again.
b. The nerve that signals the problem also senses face pain, so the
brain thinks the pain is coming from your forehead.
c. How to stop brain freeze- put tongue to the roof of your mouth and
warm it up

SAD, HAPPY, MAD…
Why do we have emotions?
a. Natural response to situations
b. BASIC EMOTIONS = fear, anger, surprise, disgust, joy, sadness
c. MORAL EMOTIONS = learned = pride, guilt, embarrassment, shame

Does the brain work after death?
a. Brain can survive up to six minutes after the heart stops beating.
Brain can still function if CPR is given.
b. Brain cannot feel pain, cannot store oxygen, cannot store glucose
(sugar)
What happens to your brain when you get a concussion?
a. Concussion = usually, brain is cushioned by fluid. If hit hard enough,
the brain can hit the skull.
b. Neurons get damaged when smashed against the skull.
c. Needs time to heal…
Neurons, knowledge, and functioning
How does knowledge go into your brain?
a. As you learn a new skill, connections are being formed between
neurons.
b. More connections made = the stronger those connections become =
the easier it is to remember those things.
