The digestive system breaks down food and absorbs nutrients and water. It begins in the mouth where teeth chew food which is then swallowed to the stomach. The stomach acids break food down further and send it to the small intestine, where most nutrients are absorbed with help from the liver and pancreas. Remaining waste passes to the large intestine where water is absorbed before waste is excreted as feces.
