India may be the next big thing in Asian gaming, and one of the region’s most nimble casino
operators is offering investors a piece of the action. Silver Heritage Group began trading on
Australia’s stock exchange last month as it takes aim on the Indian gaming market from casinos
across the border in neighboring Nepal. The A$25 million ($19 million) initial public offering
under ASX ticker symbol SVH valued the company at A$80 million.
Border casinos located in Cambodia and Laos, markets where Silver Heritage is active, serve
players from Thailand and Vietnam with no casinos available at home. Macau, on mainland
China’s doorstep, can be seen as the mother of all border casino areas. So the border casino
concept has been proven to work across Asia, as has Silver Heritage’s approach to the regional
gaming business.
Opening next year as South Asia’s first casino resort, Tiger Palace Resort Bhairahawa in Nepal

53. MAY 24, 2016 India's Ignored Gaming Potential Tops $10 Bln,White Paper Says
Name an Asian country with a billion-plus population, a rapidly expanding middle class, a
propensity to gamble and virtually nowhere to do it at home. Think again; the country
described above is not only China, but India. A report from gaming, tourism and hospitality
consultant Global Market Advisors says that India has the potential to become a $10 billion
annual legal gaming market. But international operators and major Asian gaming destinations
remain fixated on China, despite diminishing returns, largely ignoring this outsized
opportunity.
GMA’s white paper by director of research and analysis Kit Szybala emphasizes India’s
overwhelming prospects, demonstrated by demographics. As a US$2 trillion economy, India is
already larger in GDP terms than Russia, South Korea and Australia, all of which are attracting
interest from international casino investors. Yes, India’s per capita incomes are far below those
three countries. However, India’s National Council Applied Economic Research estimates the
nation’s middle class will reach 267 million this year, then more than double to 547 million by
2025. That think tank report defines middle class as earning between US$2,000 and US$21,000
annually. GMA, with offices in Bangkok, Taipei, Las Vegas and Denver, believes officially
reported figures understate true income levels, as suspected in China, due to India’s vast
underground economy.
