The Meteora is a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in central Greece, built on natural sandstone rock pillars near the town of Kalambaka. In the 9th century, hermit monks lived in the rocks, and monasteries began being built starting in the 11th century for protection from Turkish occupation. Today there are six inhabited monasteries remaining, including the largest Great Meteoron monastery from the 14th century, and the Varlaam monastery from 1541, which were originally only accessible by ropes or ladders due to the great heights of the rock pillars. The monasteries are now tourist attractions while still functioning religious sites.
