LACE
What is Lace ?
Lace is an open work fabric consisting of a
network of yarns formed into intricate
designs.
CTU GRADUATE SCHOOL | NEEDLE CRAFT | 8:00AM-12:00 NN | JULY 31, 2022 | via GMeet
Lace may be hand or machine made, and
intricate patterns can be produced by either
technique.
Both narrow and wide lace fabrics are
available.
The edges of the fabric may be straight or
curved.
“lace” comes from both the Middle English and Old French
word, ”las”
Derived from the Latin ”laqueus”, which means “noose”.

• Lace seems to appear in the 16th
century in Venice.
• It was first named ‘passementerie’

inventory of the dower of François
sister. CTU GRADUATE SCHOOL | NEEDLE CRAFT | 8:00AM-12:00 NN | JULY 31, 2022 | via GMeet

• First used in men’s clothes, lace was
then worn by women in 17th century.
• In the 19th century, Napoleon 1st
decided that lace should only be worn by
women.
• In France, the first factories were set up
in the 17th century on Colbert’s initiative.
• The first looms appeared around 1820.

• In 1809, John Heathcoat from Nottingham
(UK), a young mechanic, invents the first tulle
loom, made with a system of bobbin and
carriage.
• Saint Pierre – lès – Calais was the first town to
have a mechanical loom in 1820.
• 1830 : the jacquard system is associated with
the Leavers machine and enables to transform
tulle into lace.

What are the features of lace fabric?
Originally linen, silk, gold, or silver threads were
used. Now lace is often made with cotton thread,
into a design requires
more than a Good
Eye and
Skilled
Sewing.
Laces are made in different widths for different
uses. For example, a narrow lace with a Scalloped
edge is used for trimming a baby’s dress.
Narrow laces are used for trims and insertions,
wide lace fabrics are used for curtains, table
cloths, and garments.

Editor's Notes

  • #21 A handmade lace stitched with needle and thread, Alençon is best known for the raised outline of its motifs, accomplished by re-embroidering over the lines with fine cording. It has enough body to support sequins and beading, and is often used to create detailed appliqués.  Named for the city in France, Chantilly lace is made by hand through the twisting and braiding of delicate silk threads wound on a series of bobbins (hence known as a type of “bobbin lace”). It is recognizable for the intricate detail of its patterns, which may or may not be outlined by flat, untwisted strands of thread, and it’s light, airy look and feel.  Also a type of bobbin lace, Guipure is noted for being meshless, using bars or plaits of thread to connect the patterns that compose its motifs instead of netting. It offers a multitude of patterns that aren’t strictly floral, and its weight and heft make it a favorite for winter and fall.
