Editor's Notes

  • #3ย (Excerpt from Millennium Reunion Opening Remarks by CAPT John Roberts) On the 17th of August 1956, 23 brave souls from around the globe arrived in Newport to begin the inaugural class of the Naval Command Course. Among them were officers from eight NATO nations, nine Latin American countries (including Cuba), and one officer each from Spain, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Amazingly, in those early days, the course was, for a considerable part, made up of individuals, including the NCC instructors, who were formerly at war against each other when they were junior officers. Commander E.H. Van Rees, of the Royal Netherlands Navy, member of the class of โ€™59 summed it up nicely when he wrote: ย  ย  โ€œIt was interesting to hear (prior to showing an instructional film), the U.S. officer (delivering the lecture) apologize to the Japanese student for as the film was made during the war, there were some rude comments in it about the Japanese.โ€ ย  There upon the Japanese student laughed and remarked: โ€œYou should have seen some of the movies we had about you in those days!โ€ ย  ย  Commander Van Rees explained that the German student in his class was a U-boat commander during the war. He torpedoed HMS Ark Royal in the Mediterranean and was later captured and became a prisoner of war of the Americans and spent considerable time in a POW camp in Arizona. (His trip to Newport was actually his second visit to the United States.) The Australian student served on a destroyer sunk by a German bomber, and the Canadian student was on a ship put out of action by an Italian aircraft. Despite all of this, somehow the students managed to get along quite well, and eventually became life long friends.
